Most anime DVDs from Japan won't include English subs, other than major releases like Ghilbli films. A higher percentage of Japanese Blu-rays have English subs, but there's still a lot that don't.

Manga from Amazon.co.jp will also be in Japanese. The shipping will also be very high since they charge more for books. If you want to import Japanese manga, try these links:

Shipping is feasible if you're used to importing. I don't pay a lot more then when I import from the US.

Price is decent too, but sometimes I find a better deal on Yahoo Auctions.

As for subs, it depends on the release. If it's an anime that they already consider to release abroad, then chances are english subtitles will already be included. For most, though, no subs. Here's how you can check if a release has English subs: if it says 字幕：英語, then it means English subs are included.

If you don't want to remember Japanese characters, you can always install the gTranslate Add-on for Firefox. Helps a lot with translating shorter sentences
