Default So ... wait. Why are publishers doing exclusive content for 360 again?

An article with some facts and that doesn't bash Sony or the PS3, it's getting rare these days

http://gamer.blorge.com/2008/10/26/a...-install-base/

Quote:
Analysis: PS3 selling more games than Xbox 360 with smaller install base

The PS3 is rapidly becoming the bread-winner for many of the third party publishers. We wrote a story a few months ago where according to EA’s financial report the PS3 was the clear bread-winner over the Xbox 360 and the Wii. Now it seems that Konami, Namco Bandi and Ubisoft have joined the ranks of EA where the PS3 console is bringing in more money than the Xbox 360.

EA

In our previous story, we talked about how the PS3 is EA’s new bread-winner in terms of bringing home the bacon. According to EA’s previous financial statement, the PS3 accounted for about 17% of total revenue in comparison to the Xbox 360’s 10%. That is quite significant when considering that EA is the largest third party video game publisher in the world.

Namco Bandi

Namco Bandi is the largest third party publisher in Japan. According to the publisher’s recent financial statement, the PS3 currently moved approximately 57% more software than it’s direct competitor, the Xbox 360. Namco Bandi is sort of the EA of Japan, considering the amount of revenue it generates from software.

Konami

Konami is one of the top three publishers in Japan in terms of revenue. With the recent release of Metal Gear Solid 4, it is not all that surprising that the PS3 would have a larger piece of the pie. However, according to Konami’s recent financial statements, the PS3 accounted for a whopping 57.3% of the sales this past quarter, while the Xbox 360 accounted for only 2.6%. This changed from last year, when the Xbox 360 brought in more sales compared to the PS3.

UbiSoft

UbiSoft is considered to be one of the top three publishers in all of Europe. According to UbiSoft’s half year financial report (6 months 2008/09), the PS3 accounted for about 20% of the software sales compared to the Xbox 360’s 14%. Considering UbiSoft’s presence in Europe, this is quite a significant turn of event.

Wrap-up

It’s mind blowing that not only is the PS3 competing toe-to-toe with the Xbox 360, it is out performing the later in many of the instances. Considering that the Xbox 360 has a larger install base by 5 million, it looks like the PS3 is performing more efficiently in terms of sales for third party publishers.

Since 2005, when the Xbox 360 first launched with no competition, it seems that the PS3 has been steadily climbing in terms of the software sales. This pretty much means that the PS3 has been taking more and more potential Xbox 360 sales as time goes by. The future for the PS3 looks bright and healthy, however if the current trend continues the Xbox 360 might find itself struggling to compete in the market.

Wow, assuming that's true on the face and we're not seeing a lot of spin, that's a huge statistic.

I wonder what the threshhold is that it becomes more profitable to just stick with the single console from a development perspective....

If that trend continues maybe we will see more developers just go to the PS3 or at the very least do development on and for the PS3 and then just port it over as best they can. More development done on the PS3 to start couldn't be a bad thing.

Well to answer you're question about exclusive content for the 360. It's really simple MS pays them to make exclusive content.

well that depends like for instance Eternal Sonata and Bioshock were 360 first then come to PS3 5 times better then the 360 version but in other cases i would agree

The answer to your question is easy....$$$ talks. MS is throwing money at everyone and hoping it translates into more sales. I mean look at what MS has basically done in Japan....they've pretty much paid for all those RPG's to be exclusive or timed on the X360 in hopes it will turn it around.

MS solution to their problems usually is throw money at it.

Just to clear this up........ the rules for this forum are no XBox discussion? At all? Or you can talk about the XBox all you want, as long as it's negative? Or it's OK to talk about the XBox if someone else brings it up first? What's the deal? How does this no XBox discussion thing work here?

oh look....dishes are piling up ::throws money in the sink::

damn..the toilet is clogged....::throws money down the toilet::

drats...telemarketers are on the phone....::throws money at the phone::

throwing money at everything, solves....everything..

Yep that kind of figures. Now the question is for how long can MS still buy it's current lead ?

If this article was only about the 360's sales then it would be inappropriate. But it's a comparison so...

actually I don't know the specifics of the rules.

This article is not "about the 360", it's about the performance of the PS3 for publishers in regard to revenue.
I expanded on that to wonder (it was more of a rhetorical question, I will admit to have known the answer beforehand ) why would said companies favor 360 releases with exclusive games (temporary or not) and exclusive DLC

MS=$$ If they pay them to get timed exclusivity, the developers will see little reason not to take the money since it will eventually go out on both platforms, plus it gives them time to make the PS3 version even better... as we have seen with Bioshock, Eternal Sonata...

I think that you only can't start a thread only on xbox, meaning like starting a threat to get some help in Halo3. But I don't think that Xbox is the evil word that no one can't prononce (like valdomore in harry potter!! )

It's very simple. Coding for the 360 is similar to coding for the PC. It doesn't take alot to move one over to the other. To rebuild the game for the PS3 take alot of effort and money compared to PC to 360. You almost have to build the game from the ground up and run two teams concurrently with each other. This costs alot for a little to gain by releasing the game across all threes platforms.

By releasing for the 360, developers can code the way they were used to and not be submitted to the rampant piracy that plagues the PC. Look at GoW2, 360 only no PC release.

It's a simple budget restraint. Yes they can achieve more by doing the game on the PS3 but it's cheaper to do the 360.

You say this like you're imparting some nugget of wisdom - and?......

The article in question is talking about how PS3 versions of games are selling more than 360 versions of games.

Considering the games actually are on both systems - what's your point?

I'm answering the question in the topic.

I don't really care about what's exclusive and what's not.

That article is crap vgcharts and npd clearly show the numbers for games sold per console, and lets just say the PS3 isn't leading on any game except exclusives. Also if the game comes out on the Wii as well, it puts the PS3 in 3rd. Sales aside it is totally bull for publishers not to spread the love, but if Microsoft wants to waste money on timed exclusives so be it, its stupid in my mind though.
