THIS amazing image of a mammoth spider devouring a bird was taken in the backyard of a property near Cairns.

The image, which is being cirulated via email worldwide, is real, according to wildlife experts, The Cairns Post reported.

The photo, believed to have been taken earlier this week, shows the spider clenching its legs around a lifeless bird trapped in a web at a property near Atherton, west of Cairns.

Joel Shakespeare, the head spider keeper at NSW's Australian Reptile Park, has told ninemsn the spider was a golden orb weaver.

"Normally they prey on large insects, it's unusual to see one eating a bird," he said.

Mr Shakepeare said he had seen Golden Orb Weaver spiders as big as a human hand but the northern species in tropical areas were known to grow larger.

Mr Shakespeare told ninemsn the bird, a chestnut-breasted mannikin which appears frozen in an angel-like pose in the pictures, is likely to have flown into the web and got caught.

"It wouldn't eat the whole bird," he said.

Holy $hit, how the hell did the bird get stuck in the web? That thing must be crazy strong to trap a bird. I am deff going to Australia now! I want one as a pet.

The bird is probably dying or dead already. A bird's flight momentum is far too big to overcome a web, I think.

And Cairns is a lovely town. Must experience the GBR!

I think I'm just scared to go to the Oz. The box jellyfish alone just scary. And the venom from its snakes can turn your blood into jelly.

My younger sister has a fear of spiders, so I'd be more than welcome to show this to her.

That's exactly the kind of atitude that got the bird in the mess in the first place.

I don't know. I mean, like I said, Ausie's wildlife is rather dangerous, but if you plan on surfing, I suggest you go grab yourself some panty ho's. I heard they can keep out the sting of the box jellyfish. Wierd, but true.

That is totally fake. Sorry guys. Orb Weaving spiders don't get that big. I owned a Goalith Bird Eating spider. It was as big as a dinner plate, and there the largest spider on earth other then the one that lives underwater in the ocean and grows to like 8 feet.

Yep totally fake. Especially that picture where you fully see the spider: Plastic !

Also Spiders don't eat birds ...

Add the fact that really big spiders don't live on spiderwebs but in holes (they are too heavy for a web)

Also there is no mention of the spider's size ...

Oh and also if it was real they would have made a video of it instead of photos but of course plastic cannot move ...
