I just moved into my newly remodeled basement and I've got my PS3 setup again. I would need to run a really long CAT 5 cable through the ceiling and down to the PS3, or I could just use the Wifi.
My problem with Wifi is that it may be slow? I have used it before, but I always try to use wire-based instead. Has anyone who has Wifi ever lost the signal? Or do you notice it acting much more slow than wired based? I would like to keep it this way but these are my only fears. Please kill my fears ![]() edit-- as I type this I am noticing that my connection is MUCH faster on my PC, since my new setup brings me only 2ft from my router as opposed to having to send a wire through the entire room. therefore using wires would make my PS3 connection slower, as that used to be using the CAT 5 cable I am using for this PC now. I have no problems with WiFi either. I understand why you are worried - I was, too. The PSN downloads are kind of slow, but the online gaming is flawless (even when playing Resistance).

Yeah. I don't care too much about the downloads. Especially after the new update. If you say the online is flawless, that is all that matters.

About how much slower would you guys say it runs? KB comparison would be amazing.

Two things that you might want to consider. If you plan on using Linux on your PS3 you currently have to use cat5 to get networking support. Also, *lots* of people (myself included) have had pausing issues with Blu-Ray movies on the PS3. I think the evidence is in that most of these problems are related to the wireless network. Not everyone has the problem but it can be annoying if you're one of the unlucky ones. The workaround is easy...shut off networking while you're watching a movie.

How often does the BD playback pause? I played a little bit of a Blu-Ray today and I didn't notice any pausing. Maybe 5 minutes straight of it? I played a DVD 20 minutes straight- does it happen with them too?

The solution is simple just go and disable your network connection before you watch a movie. That is what I do and so far it has worked perfectly for me. My brother also does this at his house and he hasn't had any trouble either. As far as the wireless connection goes it is all I use and have never had any issue with playing online that I know of. Sometimes I see lag but it seems to be everyone not just one person in particular. I have never received any complaints from resistance players they are pretty down on people who lag though I think they are mainly talking about guys with "lag switches". |

I use wifi for my set-up. I've had problems at first with my connection. Right at first it worked great with no probs, then slowly, It really started to bog down. Sometimes I couldn't even sign-on. Downloading updates would take me up to a hour and sometimes it would reach around 50% and then lose the signal. This made me really mad.
Got to say I like trouble shooting my own problems instead of asked for help on these forums, cause really, people don't know how your set-up and stuff. I noticed when ever my wifi was working it was somewhere around the 40% signal strength and whenever it was not working it was lower then the 30% signal stregnth. So I repositioned my router so it was up higher and clear from most objects. That gave me up to 60% signal. I moved once more and now i'm up to 75%. Now, I have no signal dropping problems at all, and the last 1.6 update only took 10-15min to download. So I beleive if you have good signal strength, it is just as fast as if it were wired. But in a basement is another story, I know a lot of certain cell phones don't work in some basements, so if you have on of thoses some basements I think your SOL. I hope this helps, thanks for your time. |

Thanks for that. My router is just across the room from my PS3 up on a table, and when it first found the network it was at 85% signal strength or somethign around there- so I was happy about that. Once the next update comes I'll know how I feel, since the previous ones seemed pretty quick. Online gameplay has been pretty good so far I must say.

Well for me a gigabit connection works better as it makes moving video from my PC to the PS3 so much faster. I can rip a DVD and have it on my PS3 in less than 10 minutes as is.

Ah yeah. I used to be in my room, now I got everything in the basement. If your router is below you that will prob drop the signal. If you have a drop ceiling, try to put it up there- that's what one of my friends did with the same setup.
