Unhappy Blue Ray Playback On Ps3

I recently hooked up my PS3 to my pioneer plasma PDP-LX 5090. Since this is my first blue-ray player, I have a question. Is it normal that all blue-ray movies have a black band above and below the picture. I can't seem to get the image to fill the screen. I can only use the zoom in my tv, but then the quality of the image turns to crap.Is this normal for all blue-ray movies and players or is it a PS3 thing? My DVD's get upscaled perfectly and fill the screen.

you need to read up on aspect ratios... widescreen sets are 1.78:1

movies can be 1.66:1; 1.85:1; 2.00:1; 2.20:1; 2.35:1 or even 2:55:1

It's Blu Ray not Blue-Ray first of all. Not all Blu Ray movies have the letter boxing top an bottom but most do.

1:85:1 no black bars.

Terminator
Disturbia
Courage Under Fire
Goodfellas
Saving Private Ryan
28 Days Later
and all TV Show's shot in HD like Lost, 24, and Band of Brothers

2:35:1 Black Bars

300
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight (well except for the scenes shot in IMAX)
Black Hawk Down
Heat
Star Wars
Lord of the Rings
and the majority of other huge hollywood fims

Default Thanks for the quick response

Thanks a lot for the info. The question has probably been asked a milion times before but thanks for answering it again. I guess I will have to get used to the black bars. No big deal.

You won't notice. There are times when I am mid way thru a movie and then I realize that it doesn't have the black bars.

Take it easy on him...we all had a time when we first learned about aspect ratios!
