As long as you use a flat paint you'll be fine. I did alternating walls red and black and used flat paint. This way you don't get light reflecting and affecting your picture.

Use Behr Flat "Deep Black" Paint from Home Depot. It's great. . Add about 2 coats of Grey Primer first and 2 coats of this stuff and it'll look like your looking into space.

You can check the link in my signature, I ended up using "Brevity Brown" and "Black Magic" from Sherwin Williams.......

I like the results..... If you're at the Mud/sanding stage, many people like textured walls for theaters also..... I wouldn't want textured walls anywhere else in my home (actually cost a lot to have it all removed ) but for a theater, it works......

As far as what you were told....... He was probably just referring to "FLAT" and "DARK" in regards to special paint (unless you're painting a wall white to project an image onto..... then it gets complicated)

Your friend may have been referring to something like Screen Goo for painting your projector screen. For DIY you may find directions for a paint mix, Black Widow is very popular though many just use Kilz-2 primer and find it works very well.

It sounds like a dedicated HT room in progress so ya, use flat black. I use a shade of grey , that to me is perfect for my "area's". I don't know off the top of my head what its exactly called or the number.

I agree with a satin or flat for the walls. My HT was for the previous owners just a tv room but they did the wall color right with a chocolate color which suits me perfectly. Although the ceiling is white and I've though about darkening it but that's way down the road I think.

One other thing to think about. I used low VOC(volatile organic compounds) paint. It has none of the toxic crap in it that smells bad when you paint. I used it and you don't have to air the room out when you paint. It's much healthier as well. I got mine at Home Depot. Just ask for no or low VOC paint. Great stuff.

Forget flat black, you can get all the benefits from a more attractive paint as long as it is dark and flat. I used a flat dark mahogany.

Satin is too glossy.... I'd stick with Flat or Matte

my taste led me to a flat black ceiling and gunmetal grey walls. This tied in to the carpet which is black and grey 3-d squared commercial carpet. Whats so great about this you may ask? well i tell you, the moral of this thread is go with what your taste and inspiration leads you to. but one thing is key! make sure the misses agrees or you will never hear the end of it!! LOL

just one more word of caution.... if you get Sherwin Williams' "Duration" line of paints (which I used) you have to get it in Matte, because they don't make it in a flat finish.....

Good luck on the theme..... I wanted to do a themed theater also, but couldn't come up with anything that was easy, affordable, or even feasible!!!!
