Default Best Home Theater paint color?

So I've got a small home theater in my basement, which isn't it's own "room" per-say, but it's where we spend most of our time. Also have a bar, etc...

Wondering what people's opinions are on best color to paint the walls? Clearly it has to do w/ what type of decorating, furniture, etc... you have. We're thinking about definitely going darker, like Chocolate, Purple, Deep Red, etc....to have a nice theater-type ambiance.

Thoughts?

You can see what I went with (links in my signature)

But for a multi-functional room, you probably can't pull it off.

"Sheen" is more important than color. You'll want to paint the ceiling as FLAT as possible, and use a Matte finish on the walls... maybe even glossier... it'd be nice to be able to use flat, but it'll get chalky every time someone touches the wall etc.

I really like Dark-Red (Bourgundy) Otherwise you can go with darker forrest-green, or a very dark khaki color etc.

In the proper combination, you can make about any colors look good

Darn... just typed all that assuming you're talking about putting up a projector..... either way, although not as important with LCD/Plasma, it's still nice to have as little reflectivity as possible.

^^^ Looks like my colors.... yours may be more "Orange-ish" than mine..... but it's tough to tell from pictures.

Here is the door trim, and wall I did my front wall/ceiling in black also..... (Did you use the Mickey-Mouse-Ear Black they sell? I didn't, but have heard many have )

The best shade is that closest to black. Since black is very impractical to most people, dark grey is a nice alternative. Either black or grey are optimum since they do not effect how we perceive color off the screen. If you are set on other colors close to black, dark purple, dark blue, or dark brown work as well. Personally I would stay away from Orange, Red and Green and obviously Yellow or White.

I would paint trim & doors the same color as the walls. Saves time too.

In the end you want to minimize as much reflection as possible, so definitely go with a matte finish on the paint.

I went with a mocha and the ceiling paint is the lightest color of mocha as well. So everything blends together. At least to my eyes.

I think if you poke around you'll find a few threads on color. The darker the better is the general consensus. Like Beta said, just make sure it's flat.

I went the exact opposite in my theater, however, and I think it turned out great. The key to using a lighter base color is try and imagine your end result. Adding columns, panels, curtains, molding, etc will all absorb light.

I went with Flat Black front wall and ceiling and a deep red for the rest of the walls and a deep red carpet. You want warm colors, not cool.

All the trim is black as well as the blackout shades and doors. The two colors look good together. All my eqipment is black as well. Speakers, subs,av equip.

My personal favorite is a flat burgundy or dark red with gold accents.

I went with burgundy walls, black trim (quarter round and baseboards) and a dark grey ceiling. All flat.

I love the look when the lights are on, and when they're off there's not a lot of reflection.

I did black on the ceiling and screen wall and gray on the other three walls. If I was doing a more functional in house, wife approved room, I would have gone with a dark brown or dark red.

As Beta said a matte or flat paint will mark VERY easily so if you have kids you may want to do a chair molding and do the lower section in a more forgiving finish, lol.
