I saw a great deal on a sony model HT-DDW795 home theatre system. I currently dont have surround sound but live in an apartment so I cant blow the walls down with a crazy system either. Is it worth picking up eventhough it doesnt come with HDMI? thanks for any input.

If you want to enjoy the lossless audio tracks on blu-rays... then no it isn't.
If you just want a little surround sound to help draw you into movies and games more, and this fits your budget; go for it. Many people start out with small home theater in a box systems and learn as they go. You may find however that once you experience surround sound, you want more and better. There wouldn't be any part of this system that would be of much use if you wanted to start upgrading. |

not sure what you found it for, but it looks like it can be had for $125 or so.....
Nothing anyone can recommend will get you any sound for that cheap.... If you're used to just T.V. speaker audio, then I'd say this will at least add a new element to your movie watching. |

The htib you just mentioned usually run around $299 in the stores I know because thats what I paid for the one I used to have.I don't know what your budget is but if you spend a few hundred more you can get this http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...e=23-6635402-2 which is light years better than that Sony and you will get hi def audio too.I am sure other members can help find even better deals for even cheaper.

I bought one when starting out, and for 200 dollars it really isn't half bad. As long as you go in expecting 200 dollar audio, you are getting exactly what you pay for. Just expect to be upgrading later.....

I'm not going to tell you that you should buy one over the other. What I will do is share a little of my story, and you can decide if you'll end up the same way.
I started with a HTiB i purchased at Costco, because my DVD player died, and I wanted to try something different. It had an integrated 5-disc changer, and 5.1 speakers. After listening to "Hellboy" on DVD with this system, I was instantly hooked on surround. From the rain falling in the first scene, to the fight at the end, I was totally thrilled. That lasted for about 4 months. My wife rolled her eyes, as I sold the HTiB and used the money to buy my first true HT receiver. I also purchased at that time, a cheap 5.1 speaker system that I could connect to the receiver. From that point on, it's been a constant stream of new-and-improved, bigger-and-better, and so on. Home theater is as addicting as it is fun, just make sure the wallet can handle it. |

You could always end up selling it after your purchase as well, keep the boxes and take care of it. If you can't rumble the walls, it may be adequate to purchase it, but think of it as a short term fix. |

perhaps you would be more interested in building a system a little slower, you could start with a receiver and some fronts... Like get a Sony 720 and B3000 bookshelf speakers you would be around $300, then you could move the b3000's to the back when you buy some floorspeakers like the F5000's for about $100. then add the center and sub as you go along,
The Sony 720 or onkyo 605 & the polks 6750 mentioned above would be nice too....perhaps you may just want to save a little more |
