Default Anyone out there with speaker repair experience?

I have a Def-Tech Supercube Reference Sub. This sub is beyond powerful! Only problem is, that at very low frequencies, there is a very annoying little noise coming from the woofer when played at low volumes. The woofer makes a "scratchy"sound, kind of like buzzing, but goes away if i put just a tiny push on the woofer's surround, just touching it with my finger tip. Any ideas on what this may be? Is the woofer blown? Aside from this noise, the sub pumps out deep-bass at very loud levels. usually the noise can't be heard at higher volumes, but regardless i'd like to get this fixed. Any ideas?

Have you tried contacting Definitive Technology themselves? They may be able to help you.

if you can't diagnose the problem, then you don't know what you need to fix......that's the problem right now.....

I have a def-tech reference series also (14" which should be the same as yours....) and looking at it, I'd say you have a tear in the cone somewhere...... if I had to guess..... either that, or it's something loose INSIDE the sub....

your sub (if the same as mine) has THREE 14" woofers.... one active, 2 passive..... I'm assuming you're only pushing on the outer-most woofer???

EDIT: I would certainly contact Def-Tech first though...... even if it costs a few hundred to fix, I'd say it's worth it.

I bought the sub from someone, so the warranty's void. Besides, that thing's freakin' heavy and moving it around's gonna be a big inconvinience.

Inconvenience????? I think mine weighs about 140 lbs or so.... but compared to not having it work properly, I'd say I'd put up with the inconvenience.....

Just pay to get it fixed! (how much did you buy it for?)

I'm pushing on the middle of the three, the active woofer. Now that I think about it, I had a similar problem with another sub. When i took the woofer out, i realized that the problem was in the actual woofer's wire-terminals. When i soldered the speaker wire into a solid part of the terminals the problem went away. I may have to try this

I understand what u're saying, and I think I may have to get it done. I paid 1100 for it. It worked perfectly fine when i got it, which is why i thought it was a steal!

U think it will cost around $200? Not just that, where can i find someone to fix it?

It could be ;

A. The spider has either separated from the magnet
B. The voice coil is warped through excessive heat build up
C. There's a wire touching the driver inside?

If you can remove the driver for closer inspection you could check the spider, its easy enough to fix that. If its the voice coil it needs to go to an expert, or be replaced.

The only time I have ever had a scratchy sound in one of my woofers was when I damaged the voice coil on one of them. The voice coil was no longer traveling the path it should have been and it was making a scratchy noise as it made contact with the magnet. If that's the case, you will need a new driver and that aint cheap

Thanks for the advice... Unfortunately, it's sounding more and more like my worst fear... f'd up woofer! Oh well, the sub's tucked away in a corner far enough where, IF the LFE is strong enough, i won't hear that annoying noise.

If there are more suggestions out there, I'd love to hear them!

By the way... the software that makes the buzzing the noise the worst, is the Egypt, Dolby Digital trailer, VERY low-bass!

I recently replaced two woofers on my Hsu Research subwoofers. One of them was completely blown and the other was just about 10 years old. I called the company and talked to Dr. Hsu. He suggested that I replace the woofers. The cost was $100 for each woofer. I decided to look around and see what is available out there. I wanted to replace the woofers with something better. After all, you only live once.

The best place for speaker parts and speaker building is Parts Express. I ordered two different subwoofers, one from Parts Express ($160 each) and another from Madisound ($220 each). I also bought some gasketing tape, screws, and polyfill dampening material. If everything goes smoothly, it will probably take you an hour. Be careful when you turn the subwoofer around. Ask for help. You can order a woofer from Def. Tech or you can buy a third party woofer. I plan to build a new subwoofer with the old woofer that is still working.

My subwoofers have become scary and sound better than ever. Thank god my house is a pretty good distance away from the neighbors. I plan to create a thread with some pictures for the benefit of others who may have speaker problems.
