I believe Criterion still owns the rights in the U.S. and they are just now starting to release BDs. All of the medium and long shots in Ran (not to mention the striking use of color) are just crying out for a detailed hi-def presentation on Blu-ray. Hopefully Criterion will answer that call sooner rather than later.

Yeah, Ran is a great choice. The burning castles would look great!!! I really want Seven Samurai as well. It probably wouldn't benefit as much as Ran from a blu treatment because it is so much older and B/W but it is my favorite Kurosawa and one of my all time favorite films.

the hddvd which was released in France by studio canal is an excellent quality disc (PQ full frame, beaturiful, SQ remastered DTS HD)
I hope they will release a blu-ray soon but no news for now

The French RAN hardly counts as HD. Excessively soft and disappointing release.

If they do release, it's a day one purchase for me. But it looks like Criterion will probably be moving very slowly on their releases. And their catalog is hundreds of titles long....so it may be forever.

We may see Kurosawa Blu in Japan by the end of next year for his 100th birthday, however given that we're all now one big happy region, expect a minimum of a 6-12 month delay before a US release to prevent reverse importation

This was actually the first DVD I ever purchased many years ago. Coincidentally, it was also my first Amazon.com purchase. So years and thousands of dollars later and hundreds of dvds and BDs later, it would be great to watch Ran on BD. Gives me goosebumps just thinking of it.

It was DEFINITELY a fun movie.

You should check it out. Probably a 99cent rental most places if they have it.

One of the most beautiful movies ever shot, I would buy this on BD in a second.
