Lightbulb I only Just figured it out.. duh

We all know the issues that dvd9 imposes on games of this gen, especially in the latter half of the console-lifecycle.

But, if one steps back, there was nothing else MS could have done. Lets see the choices they had wrt disc-format for games back in the day when designing the 360:
1. BD: Non-starter. That would just have handed sony the crown and helped BD win the coming format war, thanks to the economies of scale from game discs plus the psychological factor of their support.

2. HD-DVD: Even now, they have no wish to support hd-dvd as a format in their consoles, even just for movies.

That choice was def. not viable back then for the 360 cos it would have added cost to it, delayed launch and if hd-dvd lost the movie-format war (which I suspect MS now knows will happen eventually), 360 would have been the Only CE hardware using hd-dvd discs.. in the world. Not a good situation to be in.

So, that left DVD9. It was not a choice as much as it was a lack of options.

My prediction is xbox3 will be out/announced by 2009, using the winner of the format war (BD).

Then, we will hear platitudes from MS about how they welcome the chance to use the capabilities of the BD format and how great BD50 is as a piece of "science fiction", i mean technology

Hell, the next xbox will prob play BD movies.

MS didnt want to delay the 360 like the ps3 was delayed so they opted out of truly supporting the format.

They released the HDDUD hardon to be a thorn in Sonys side and make it more confusing to customers, so they could have more time to develop their digital distribution of movies and TV.

If you look at it, the Elite 360 is meant to counter the APPLE iTV.

Yeah, this new Elite 360 is all about downloadable media and taking on Apple, etc.

Still, I expect before the end of this year Sony will have introduced their own download service for the PS3, I certainly expect Sony Connect to become available allowing you to buy and download music straight to your console. TV and movies will follow.

They could have used a high capacity 3.5 form factor hard drive and allowed users to install part of the game on the hard disk so it wouldn't have to access everything strictly from the DVD.

True, but the optical media still would be DVD9 and the big games would still suffer from the multi-disc problem. If they had to allow installation of >= 2 DVD worth of game data to HDD per game, the HDD would have had to be huge.

I am not defending MS, far from it. Just pointing out how their, Imo, stupid anti-optical media positioning prevented them from using BD for games.

MS: Downloads are the future!

No, the future is the PS3 and BD format. The 360 is already ancient and, Imo, will be demoted to 2nd class status wrt PS3 by 2009. MS should wise up and go with a BD drive for games on the 720.

Downloads may be the far future, but I hope that the far future of technology has as little MS in it as possible.
