Arrow Captian Marvel ~ Shazam!

Not much, but it's movement...

Bill Birch and Geoff Johns to Write Shazam!

Quote:
Warner Bros. Pictures has hired actor-turned-writer Bill Birch and Geoff Johns to write Shazam!, the adaptation of the DC Comics series featuring Captain Marvel.

Get Smart helmer Peter Segal remains on board to direct and he'll also produce with his Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing. Johns will also consult on the project.

Shazam! centers on teenaged Billy Batson, who transforms into the superhero when he says the word "Shazam!" The studio is now looking to go back to the original DC Comics source material for inspiration.

Previous drafts have been written by John August, William Goldman, Bryan Goluboff and the team of Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow.

Birch is currently writing Warner Bros.' One Finger Salute to which Segal is attached to direct.
--------------------------------------
Variety is reporting Captain Marvel now has a director and is moving forward. I have to admit Captain Marvel isn't one of the comic characters I know much about. Not sure what to expect. Dwayne Johnson had been attached to play the villain in this (not sure if he still is)

This from MTV:

It looks like we may be hearing the triumphant cries of “Shazam!” a lot more in the near future, as Variety reports today that the a film adaptation of “Captain Marvel” (the DC Comics version, just to clarify) has been making some serious moves at Warner Bros. lately.

In the Variety piece, Warner Bros. has signed up director Peter Segal (”Get Smart”) and his Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing to a three-year first-look deal. While that may leave the average comic movie fan scratching their head and saying, “…and this is comic news because…?,” Variety makes note that, as part of the deal, Warners have also acquired rights from New Line for an adaptation of “Captain Marvel” as part of the deal, to which Segal has long been attached.

One of DC’s oldest characters — with a long history of legal nightmares that put the current “Watchmen” legal mess to shame — “Captain Marvel” will reportedly be a standard origin story, following teenager Billy Batson who, when upon shouting the word “Shazam,” becomes the all-powerful superhero, Captain Marvel. With the exception of Segal as director and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson saying he’d be interested in the role of Black Adam, no other information is currently available regarding the property, but considering the recent surge in popularity of second-tier characters, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this film put on the fast track.

Always loved Shazam(Captain Marvel) in the comics. If they keep it simple and just focus on Marvel and Black Adam it should be a good movie.

I really want this movie to succeed. But I have heard that any Captain Marvel movie will be aimed at a slightly younger demographic then is typical for these superhero movies, which might hurt its reputation in the fan community. I think casting will be critical here for both Billy and Captain Marvel. With one magic word...

Geoff Johns is a quality comics writer with a good knowledge of and respect for DC characters. This movie could turn out great if they cast it right and properly market it.

Well if you are a fan of the comic, you know what Captain Marvel is, so you will expect to see something for a more younger audience. That could still turn out to be a very good movie.

I don't think everything need's to be dark in tone like TDK or Watchmen, a lighter superheroe movie can be fun as well.

Captain Marvel is definitely lighter in tone than other modern superheroes, even more than a character like Superman. My only concern is the moviemakers go too far in the other direction and make the story aimed at eight year-olds. A movie can be light in tone while still maintaining a relatively sophisticated story.

With Geoff Johns co-writing this, I now officially psyched for this one. Johns is one of the best writers in DC currently and it is cool to see him switch over to a new media.

It would be good to have a Shazam! - Captain Marvel movie. Black Adam would be the perfect adversary since he's is the same but opposite to Captain Marvel. Dwayne Johnson would be a good fit for the Black Adam's role.

It would be cool to see a scene where Captain Marvel grab Black Adam from behind while they were fighting and then yelled "Shazam!" so that Black Adam is zapped by the lightning bolt and changed back to his alter ego.

They need to do the same (even matchups) with any other DC characters:

Superman vs. Mongul, Darkseid, etc.
Green Lantern vs. Sinestro
Flash vs. Professor Zoom (reversed Flash)
Wonder Woman vs. the Cheetah

Yes there could be a danger of that due to the material.

Glad this is making some headway I just hope it wont turn out to be a Rated G comedy/Disney flick

And I hope Black Adam doesn't make an appearance until a potential 2nd film maybe just have the wizard give Billy a little background on Adam in the first and thats it (cameo appearance?)

I'd prefer the first to be more about Billy and the orphanage the whole origin/backstory yarn

I also hope they don't give his family powers either
