Default The Matrix Trilogy discussion

After rewatching the trilogy on Blu I thought it would be interesting to get everyones thoughts, and feelings on the trilogy as a whole. Which movie was the best? Why? What should've been done different? Etc. Finally do you feel the Matrix trilogy will be remembered as a groundbreaking acheivement in sci-fi cinema.

I first recommend all of you who own this to watch the Matrix experience part of the disc and check out the "philosophy of the matrix."

The Matrix- I feel this film could've easily stood alone amongst the likes of Blade Runner, 2001, and I would even put Dark city in that category as well. I think everyone can agree that the buzz surrounding this movie after its release was HUGE and unlike any other movie they had ever seen. The fact that it was so philosophically heavy and thought provoking was amazing to me and because of this movie alone I became a huge philosophy buff. The ideas, the questions, the plot, the characthers, and the special effects translated into perfection in my opinion. From when Neo gets unplugged, "The real world", to the infamous lobby scene. This film made such a huge impact.

The Matrix Reloaded- Probably the second or third biggest sequel anticipation movie to come out since Empire strikes back, Episode 1, The dark Knight. Seeing Zion for the first time was satisfying to me, I think I was expecting more. I absolutely love the Ritual that went on however, finding it to be a beautiful interpretation of human life and celebration, regardless if it coming off to some as one long music video or a beer commercial. The transition from the real world/zion to the matrix didn't feel as smooth as the first movie, and almost felt like a different movie on it's own. The introduction of the Merovingian was brilliant and bringing up more thought provoking concepts and ideas to which we never seem to question. The freeway chase between Morpheus, Trinity and the Twins was mind blowing, as I believe it being one of the greatest car chase sequences in cinema. The introduction of the Architect was also interesting to me and opened up our idea of the matrix as a whole. The ending left alot of unanswered questions which I was hoping to get the answers too in the third film.

The Matrix Revolutions- Picking up where the second left off I loved that Neo was trapped inbetween "realms" or worlds and that whole sequence with the train man and the Merovingian I felt like it would almost exceed Reloaded, but I was wrong. I really wish they would've expanded the Merovingian, train man, twins alot more, instead we got more Zion, which seemed to be missing something this time around. I Look at revolutions as stictly a mission of peace and war. The war in Zion was pretty to look at, but the action as a whole didn't have much depth, and the same can be said about the final duel between Neo and Mr. Smith, however the end result of the duel between the two was VERY rewarding especially the dialogue. The ending of the film however, still left alot of things unclear and unanswered to the viewer, which might be on purpose, or lack of creativity and stringing all three movies as one together. It does make you wonder if we could see another movie with the open ending.

Trilogy as a whole- I felt each movie could stand on its own as being a great sci-fi flick, especially the first one. Each film offers something the other did not in my opinion, which to me makes all three valuable to one another and the viewer. I felt the Wachowski brothers missed an opportunity to make the greatest sci-fi trilogy of all time, instead in my eyes they fell short with the following two installments. Where they did succeed was bringing philosophy, and action together into one, which in my opinion puts the trilogy up there with some of the best.

First Movie = A+

Second Movie = B+ (little emotional core or story telling, some parts feel to similar to the first, but still very fun and different)

Third Movie = C (it has that rambo 5 feeling of watching people fight for 30 minutes straight)

First good, edgy, revolutionary, spectacular.

They really should have cut the first one off about 5 minutes earlier. Then ended the trilogy right there as well.

I bought all 3 on DVD back in the day. However I just recently sold the last 2 and kept the first. As well I don't plan on upgrading the DVD as the movie to me just really isn't that great anymore.

Cool

I did enjoy all three films, but the first one is the most memorable and groundbreaking of the three.

i dont know why i was hoping or expecting warner to re-master the series to further maximize blu-ray's capabilities, but clearly they did not.

i was really expecting more of an impact. PQ/AQ wise that is. the movies are still the movies. first was epic, second not so much, and third was close to abysmal.

if.......warner decides to re-master the first matrix movie when that digi-book thing or whatever comes out, and its a vast improvement over the one included in the trilogy.....then i will most definitely re-buy it. i think they could and should have re-done the transfer and made it as visually and audibly stunning as is possible.

I enjoyed all three Matrix movies, but I especially liked the first two more than the third.

I am a little disappointed in the Matrix Blu-rays though. They just don't have the pop that they could have had if they were encoded properly.

I hope that the 10th anniversary release of The Matrix will have a complete new encode with an average bitrate into the 30's where it should have been encoded in the first place. But we are talking Warner and so I doubt we’ll see any improvement in the BD encode. Rather, WB will probably include a book or something.

I loved every movie in the trilogy. I heard complaints about the second and third not being good but I disagree. Of course once the amazement had waned from the first movie and its new type of 3D movements, we were not bound to be as surprised with the sequels but they are nonetheless very good and in my opinion, underrated.

The only negative point seems to be
[Show spoiler] that Neo had to die and that the end was not a true victory over the machines but only a truce
which makes me hope for at least a 4th film or better yet a full new trilogy.

i'm Kinda confused.
Isn't the blu ray of the matrix exactly the same transfer from the HDDVD?
All reviews say the transfer is just prestine at all levels ( Video/Audio )
Why do you say that isn't "THAT good"?
And don't forget next year there will be a 10th year special edition release.

I may be in the minority here, but, I used to think the first was the only one worth watching (having seen the others only once). But, now, after watching them back to back; I think the second one is the best. Where's that option on the poll?

+1. The freeway chase is amonst the best. The Chateau fight scene was also amazing. Along with Neo's fight with the Agents in the beginning, Trinity's motorcycle dismount/taking out the power station guards scene, Neo and Seraph's fight scene and Trinity's fight with the Agent. There are SO many great scenes in Reloaded and somehow the majority dislike it. The only reason I can think of is the "To be continued" ending.

I have read a lot of negative stuff about the 2nd and 3rd films in this trilogy but I watched them for the 1st time last week and have to say they were both very impressive to me. Sure the 1st one is the best but I really enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd movies as well.

I HATED the highway scene. I think it should have been about 5 minutes shorter. It got boring how long it was.

Considering the trilogy in it's entirety, it really sucks as far as clear story telling goes. The first movie is superb and still one of my favorites, but it is tarnished and dimisnished by the subsequent movies. Reloaded has parts that are mindblowing better than the first, but as entire movie, it really loses steam and sets up the tale for failure. I really thought at the end, after Neo zaps the sentinels, that even through the survivors thought they were in the real world, they were in fact really still inside the matrix. Now that would have been a great angle to explore. Basically, by the time part 3 ends, there is really no hope for humanity to ever achieve victory over the machines. While some parts work well, together as a whole, you have one of the weakest tales ever to grace the silver screen.

I agree and disagree. I think as a sci-fi trilogy its as good as they come. In my opinion each film stands on its own as being a satisifying experience.

Why do you feel theres no hope in humanity? I didn't really get that interpreatation I felt that Neo acheived peace between the machine and humanity due to the machine's realizing that they need humans just as much as humans need them.

The Matrix - Sci-Fi classic, wicked action scenes! 9 / 10
Matrix Reloaded - Again good action but the plot is way too convoluted. 6.5 / 10
Matrix Revolutions - One of the biggest disappointing sequels ever. I can barely watch this one. 4 / 10

Animatrix - Cool art but some of the chapters aren't interesting at all. 6 / 10

My opinion is that the Matrix trilogy is one of the most disappointing movie franchises ever. It peaked at the first but the confusing and dumb sequels ruin the brilliant universe of original created.
