Default Onkyo HT-S9100 Help!

I was reading some of the forums on different Onkyo receivers but I still have some questions that I am hoping someone can help me with. When listening to a CD the sound volume is at a -61 DCb and it sounds fine. If I start a DVD at that sound level you can't even hear it. You have to be at about a -30 DCB to hear it but if you switch back to a CD watch out as it is incredibly loud. I also have very little bass coming from the sub even with the sub turned all the way up. I had a previous sub that I really liked and hooked it up thinking it was just the onkyo sub but it has to be the receiver because now even that sub barely puts out anything. If any one can help it would really be appreciated. I was so excited to get this and not I am very disappointed as it really does not sound too great. Called the Onkyo help line but it was not too much help. IF there is a trick to setting it up besides the automatic calibration please let me know.
Thanks
