Default Onkyo 606 and Blu-ray hook-up problem

Bought the 606 all excited, hook-up the Sony 350 and just get a rolling type of picture. I can make out the home screen of the blu-ray but nothing else.
HELP.
My connections are with HDMI. The player works fine hooked up directly to the tv and my old receiver. Any ideas???

What happens when you go into the setup on the receiver (it has an OSD), does the picture roll still?

I'm not sure what you mean about the set-up? I assigned the DVD to an input via HDMI if that is what you are referring to. Still had no luck.

Well I figured it out. It seems on my Sony 350 blu-ray I had to change the "Output Video Format". I had to change the format from "Auto" to "1080i".
How did I figure this out? Well when I plugged the blu-ray via HDMI to the TV it displayed 1080i. I remembered in the manuel something about the output video format which lead me to solve the problem.

Now my question is why did I have to make this adjustment? Isn't that the whole idea of "Auto formatting"? Is it because the tv is 5 years old? Am I getting anything less picture wise?

I would love to know if you can answer my questions.
