Question Receiver and Speaker Matching?

Hi, I'm new to all this stuff and I was just wondering... is there certain speakers that pair better with certain receivers and vice versa?

I have the pioneer 1018 receiver and just bought some polk rtia7's/fxia4's/csia6 and im wondering if they would sound different with a certain receiver, or if my receiver sounds better with certain speakers?

any help is appreciated, thanks

That is to be determined by each individual. (To each his own) It is practically impossible to not be biased when deciding which speakers go best with which receivers.

If it sounds good to you...that's all that matters. I am sure if you spent 10k on speakers it may sound better but would the increase be worth the cost?

basically the way i see it, if your receiver is said to color the sound to be higher, you should get lower sounding speakers to bring it closer to neutral, if the receiver is neutral the speakers should be as well, and if the receiver sounds deep, higher speakers...

so basically... whatever gives you accurate, uncolored sound is best.

One more factor you might want to consider is impedance matching.

Take my Onkyo 805 as an example. My front (L+R) speakers are 4ohm (nominal). If I set my 805 to 6ohm and then run the Audyssey setup (805 can be set to either 4ohm or 6ohm), the sound seems restricted and has a significant loss of dynamics. The sound will open up when I set the 805 back to 4ohm (and then run the Audyssey again, of course).

I noticed that in another post it did mention setting the 805 to 6ohm (no matter the speakers are 4 or 6 or 8ohm) will give you more dynamics and more amp power (provided that you run your amp within its safety limit such as not playing it very loud very often), but my personal experience tells me matching the impedance between the amp and the speakers give me a more natural and dynamic sound.

+1 ^ This is same info I got from a hi-end local a/v store. Salesman said you dont want to get a bright sounding receiver with bright speakers, nor a warm sounding receiver to be matched up with warm speakers. The resulting match of the two should be opposites in order to better obtain neutral sound.

I think the general consensus with Pioneers are that they are a tad bright. Don't quote me there because I'm Not Sure. How the Polks sound would also be your opinion but I think they're nice sounding (can't be too much more specific there).
