Default A Good CHEAP (Value Oriented) Receiver?

I'm trying to better my dad's entertainment room. As many of you know, I just bought the Fluance 5.1 set for him:

http://www.fluance.com/fluanceavhtb.html

However, I am in need of a cheap, decent receiver. I believe 100 watts per channel, and a system that is at-least of 5.1 qualities will fit the bill.

Many people will recommend the Oynko 606. The problem, is that they are nearly $350 right now, and they might be a tad bit overkill.

His room is the size of an average master bedroom (he has converted it into a movie room).

I'm thinking this below might fit the bill:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDG720-...9062959&sr=8-1

He is using a PS3 as his main player. If the receiver above is not good, what do you guys recommend for 200-300 (nothing over 300, and even at 300, he's going to be raking more funds than he probably wants). We just need something that will process everything over HDMI, and spit it out at 5.1 channels, with 100 watts per channel. Any other Bells and Whistles are not needed.

I also wanted to get his speaker wire ordered.

I would suppose 12 ga wire is all he needs?:

I understand that you dont want to spend too much but after owning the 710, I felt it was a rather weak receiver, I haven't spent much time with the 720 although I wouldn't expect it too be a huge improvement. I would say since you are pushing bigger speakers like the fluance and not little HTiB's that it would be better if it were a better receiver like the Sony 920(which is what I just upgraded to) or the Onkyo 605/606.

Just giving you my .02

That is a really cool gift though. I am sure he will love it.

Try this one above, a little more and much better. Or the one below is New and still better.

That Marantz, or a refurbished Onkyo would be the best bang for your buck by far.

Would 12 ga wire be the route to go?

14 gauge or 16 gauge is good enough, but in the case of long runs, 12 gauge would be the best choice and is also good for lower impedance speakers.

Excellent. I'm going to order the TX-SR606S (silver), with 100 FT of 16 gauge. The longest he'd run it is about 15 feet or so. They are out of the roll of 100 feet for the 12 ga, so 14 ga should be plentiful.

15 feet from the receiver, to the floor, around the walls, and up to the speakers? That must be a super small room.

Im usually very bad at calculating length.

I thought a 3ft HDMI chord was going to be long enough to put my PS3 in my entertainment center.

My PS3 has been sitting behind my TV ever since the purchase date with that damn chord.

Reminds me, today I should be expecting an 8ft HDMI wire in the mail.

Yea, it's going to be more much than 15FT.

I used about 45 feet of wire to my furthest surround speaker so you may want to consider a bit more length...

Order placed. He's going to have a better christmas than me. I told him what I want...which is NOTHING.

The plan is, is to have this all setup by christmas day or whatever, so we can watch both of the Batmans back-to-back with his new system.

Maybe I should order 200 ft of wire...ughh

For anyone else looking for cheap receivers people have posted great links but you can also check out http://stores.ebay.com/Harman-Audio

The auctions for the 347 have been ending under $250.00 for quite some time.

Driver-

ordered 150 feet of 14 ga wire for him.....

Should be enough, if not close. I'm sure he's got spare wire too IF needed.

Leaves about:

RL = 50 FT
RR = 50 FT
FR = 10 FT
FL = 10 FT
C = 10 FT

I'll take pictures with my DSLR, and write up a review.

I want to thank EVERYONE for their help in finding links for me, and making suggestions. You guys simply ARE the best. The best feeling of christmas is the excitement of seeing others get excited.

I would GUESS this is how I would hook this all up.

PS3 connects to Onkyo through HDMI
Onkyo connects to TV through HDMI

That simple?
