As you can see in my signature, our family's LCD is a Samsung LN-T3732H 720p 37-inch. Technically its native resolution is 768p. It has only 5,000:1 contrast ratio and 60Hz refresh rate.
In a few days, my family and I will be watching The Dark Knight on Blu-ray for our first Blu-ray viewing. I know it will be better than the DVDs we watched on this LCD. How good will it be? How much is our screen holding back the clarity of Blu-ray? Is it true that there wouldn't be much difference between 1080p and 768p on a 37-inch LCD? Thanks. |

Your going to get many varying opinions on this. All I can say is that I have a 720p 50" plasma and it looks amazing with blu-rays. The difference over dvd is huge.
You're definitely going to see a difference between dvd and blu-ray. As far as whether you'll be missing much I would say no. But everyone will have a different opinion on that. Bottom line: I say don't worry about what you "may" be missing, and just enjoy what you have. ![]() |

I've got a very entry level 720p plasma set, and I thoroughly enjoy Blurays.
I do get a little jealous when I go over to the 'rents house and watch a BD on my dads 58" 1080p Panasonic plasma. It handles blacks and dark scenes much better. Everyones gotta start somewhere! |

I think you will be missing some of the experience due to the size of the tv and also the 720P.
I watched a blu-ray on a 50" 1080P and I find myself holding back from upgrading my 42" 1080P tv. ![]() Will it be better than a dvd? No question. |

bought a Sharp Blu Ray player and hooked it up to my 37 inch sharp LCD 720 TV.... is it worth it for me to play blu ray on this tv or should I only be playing blu ray if I have a 1080 TV...? Thanks... New to BLU RAY.

I just watched on our 768p LCD, back to back, The Dark Knight and Iron Man with my dad. Blu-ray is awesome. I played around with LCD picture settings, and I think I arrived at a nice setting. Although our HT setup may not look as nice as some of the ones in the galleries, but when the lights are off, it is just like having your own theater at home. The sound is fantastic. Never noticed any muffled dialogue with TDK. The IMAX scenes were amazing. (Btw, ratio switches didn't bother me a bit.) Everything is flawless, and images are rich in color, unlike DVD on an LCD. Maybe a 1080p set will look better, but this is a major step up from DVD.

Dark Knight is probably the best movie on blu ray. The pq is amazing. And I have a 720p plasma.

Maybe some of you can answer the question of how a Blu-ray player will down sample a 1080P picture to a 720P. Are some players better at it than others? Just throwing every third pixel out might work but I doubt that is how it is done. If the TV does the down sampling then my question is moot. |
