Default Question to Onkyo 606 or 706 owners

I was wondering how do you turn on your powered sub? Right now I have a Kenwood VR-8070s with a Definitive Technologies Pro Sub 1000. I use the plugin in the back so when I turn on my receiver the sub comes on with it. Is this possible with the 706 or will I have to turn it on manually? If so, am I better of looking at a Yamaha RX-V863?

all depends on the sub itself i think.

My JBL sub woofer automatically senses when the 706 is on and turn's on by itself..the red light turns green and that tells you when it's on.

if that's what your asking...All sub's would be able to do that if their programmed to.

I think this sub has the capability to do signal sensing, I will have to read up on it. I would like to not use signal sensing because of some low volume tv watching and unexpected turning off and on because of loss of signal.

I was initially concerned about this as well, but it's not much of an issue. Here's the deal, at least with my Onkyo 605 and my (not-so-hot) sub:

1. The sub when set to "Auto" only kicks on when it gets an LFE signal. If you properly have your crossover points set up, normal TV watching will not kick it on.

2. Once it's on, it'll typically stay on for a grace period- say, around 10-15 minutes or so. So you don't have it constantly flickering on and off.

Finally... don't plug it into the receiver. Those things are power-hungry and I've read that that can be a bad idea. What you can do if you really want is to get a surge protector/power conditioner that has an outlet that will only kick on when the corresponding outlet is getting power. So you put your receiver and your sub into those outlets, and your sub will only be on when your receiver is on.

However... just put it on Auto. While it will use some power in standby it's pretty much a non-issue.

Excellent post Aramis. I came in here to try and explain things a little better, but after reading what you said, there is really nothing else to say.
