Default Flat Panel Mounting Height?

Is there a set standard in how far off the ground you mount a flat panel tv or is it personal preference?

I have seen some low and high on the wall. My mount is already on the wall and the center of the tv is exactly 4 feet - 6 inches off the floor. My viewing distance is 8 feet and the angle from the sofa to the tv is roughly 15 degrees.

To me, this seems good. It also seems good for when I am playing Wii tennis and other stand up games. Seems like a perfect height for me. Our Samsung plasma is also mounted at the same height upstairs over the fireplace.

Default great question!

I just bought a 65 inch sharp LCD and I have been wondering the same thing. Hopefully we will get some responses. Neil

I think generally speaking they suggest have the middle of the screen at eye level, from veiwing position.

If you want to mount the television higher they suggest not exceeding the bottom of the screen being at eye level.

I have my 50" kuro mounted so that the eye level is about 10" from the bottom of the plasma frame, and the tilt is very slightly down--probably only 2-3 degrees.

This is how mine is.

I think mine is almost the same. 50" Panasonic and the bottom of the frame is at eye level or lower.

Post Take a look at mine in my HT Gallery!

Initially, I wanted mine mounted high. But after watching 1 movie like that, I hated it.

I removed it and mounted it where mid-screen is about eye level while sitting. That is the most comfortable position.

You can look at my gallery (construction vs. finished) and see the 2 mounting heights.

My current position has the bottom of the screen at about 32" off the floor (for a 58" plasma screen).

Can you all measure from the floor to the bottom frame of your tv? I am interested in seeing actual numbers - not pictures - they can be deceiving.

The best thing that will work for you is relative to your sitting position - not ours. Sit in your viewing area and measure the distance from your eye level to the floor. That represents your prime viewing height, which as stated should be at the center of your screen or perhaps just below the center of your mounted screen height.

I have a 58 inch plasma mounted 28 inches above floor level.

I had cut out a piece of cardboard the same size as the TV and had my kids vote on the best height. Turns out we all voted for the TV to be centered vertically, 30 inches from the floor and 30 inches from the ceiling.

After wall mounting the TV it turned out to be 28 inches from the ground. I guess I made a small mixup.

This is about the same position it would be at if it were on resting on a TV stand.

Very very happy with this position for the TV.

Really? That's only 2 feet off the ground + 4 inches. You would have to look down to see it. Lol.

I agree! I have a stand that enables me to mount it a little higher so I could place my Centre Channel there, but I chose not to. My viewing position at eye level matches that to the centre of the screen. I have a special rack mount for my Centre Channel that I place in front of my setup for watching movies. It gets disconnected otherwise.

Thanks for the info.

I did some math and my center of the screen is at 54". Bottom of the screen would be at 38". I don't think that is bad at all. I think it's perfect for me.

I measured and the bottom of my plasma is between 34" and 35" off the floor. I'm really happy with the height.

First figure out where you want the center of the tv to be...left or right on the wall. It doesn't have to be exact up and down but it does left or right. Then mark where your studs are at. We usually use painters tape and a stud finder. And find the center of the stud...not the sides. Once you have that done figure out if the wall plate for your tv mount will fit the studs. If they don't fit the studs with 4 lag bolts then you will need to get 4 - 3/8" (which you will need to make holes in the sheet rock with a 1/2" drill bit) wall mount screws. We always mount them SHOULDER HEIGHT to the MIDDLE OF THE TV. Put your shoulder up against the wall and put a piece of masking tape there. Then measure the tv height and put the middle of that where you put the tape. That will give you the top and the bottom of where the tv will sit. Put the mount on the tv then measure down to where the hook mounts on the plate you put on the wall. Then measure that same distance from the top TV mark down. This is where you will put your mounting wall plate on the wall. THE TOP OF THE PLATE IS WHERE THE HOOK WILL BE...NOT THE LAG SCREW HOLES!! Mount the tv wall mount plate on the wall. 2 lags in the middle on the stud and 2 wall mount screws on either side as far to the end of the tv wall mount plate as possible. This will give you 6 screws total holding the tv up. That's enough to easily hold a 65" plasma. But I'd use a different mount for that..one you could use 2 studs instead of one. Anyway....put the tv on the mount and see where it sits. Anything over a 42" tv I'd recommend having a helper for it. Then see how it looks. You might have to slide it side to side to get it centered. Also, depending on the mount, you might have to put all the cables on before putting on the mount. It does make it easier. That way you should only need to hang it once. And I'm assuming you have already put an electrical box (and AV cables) for power behind the tv and or will be doing it? It's much easier to do it (power electrical. the av cables can be put in before the mounting as you will know where the plate goes because you will know where the tv wall mount goes) after the tv has been mounted because then you exactly where they should be instead of it being exactly where it shouldn't be.

There a few more variables involved as to the height but this is the most common way we do it.

I built my stand so that the center of my screen was just slightly above eye level. I went to a Christmas party last night at the home of someone I used to work with. She had hers mounted over the fireplace, just like Better Homes and Gardens. It looked marvelous...... until she actually turned it on.

And the ol' neck and back start to throw a hissy fit,

When I mounted mine, I tried to make sure as best as I could measure that the center of the screen was at my eye level sitting down on the couch. It can be measured.
