Default PS3 does upconvert via component

I thought the PS3 didn't upconvert DVD via component, but last night i notcied it says it doesnt upconvert copyright DVD-R via component. so i disided to take a backup copy of an original movie I own (Matrix Reloaded) and popped it in. Sure enough my projector shows the video source as 1080i, so it did upconvert it. I placed the oroginal retail copy in and its 480p
so at least you can backup your original copies and upconvert if needed. Just thought i'd pass the info alone

that is not really upconverting is it, my Kenwood DVD player will play 480p, there is a manual switch on the back for interlace and progressive. Some movies can be upconverted without HDMI, but I noticed alot have that copy protection.

What do you mean? "that is not really upconverting is it" sure it is, how can you say its not? I checked the video source and its 1080i and the DVD movie is matrix reloaded backup on DVD-RL dual layer 8.5 gig so no loss, looks good

upconverting to me would be 720p/1080i or 1080p. not 480i to 480p

He just said that it's upconverting to 1080i Where are you getting this 480 nonsense from?

**Choo-Choo!*** Here comes the clue-train, and the next stop is you!

You just said, yourself, that you noticed that a lot of DVDs have copy protection, preventing the upconversion with component cables.

And he just explained that he's taking the DVD movie (which has copy protection on it), making a back-up copy to a recordable DVD (presumably using software that gets around any copy protection on the disc), keeping the picture and audio quality of the movie, itself the same on this copy as the original, but now this back-up copy doesn't have the protection.

The PS3 will upconvert non-copy protected DVDs to 1080i, hence when playing this back-up copy in the PS3, it WILL be upconverted to 1080i when using it in this manner.

This isn't rocket science. I don't get where you're getting this 480 stuff from, because that's not what he said at all.

With that being said, IMO it is a bit of a hassle just to watch DVD movies upconverted. I guess if you have a small handful of movies that you want to watch upconverted, this is a simple way to do it if you have a TV or Projector that doesn't have an HDMI input and you aren't in the market for a new one. If you have a TV or Projector with an HDMI input and you just don't have a cable, then just buy one cheap online.

If you have a really large DVD collection, it could be a hassle to back them all up for this purpose.

Cool! If you are making back-ups of your movies anyway, then it's nice to get the added benefit.

So you guy's say useing the pS3 looks good.
I'll try it out tonight.
I always use the Blade 3 DVD To see how well a DVD player Up-converts.

Yes it does, it looks darn good. I remember buying an upcnvertor and then Sony doing a firmware update 30 days after I bought it, so I couldn't return it.

I was a little pissed, felt like I threw some money away.
