Default PS3 To Support 3D Gaming In 2009?

I really didn't understand the article fully, so if someone can break it down and explain what 3D gaming actually is and how it differs from current games, it would be appreciated.

PS3 To Support 3D Gaming In 2009?

"Spread the word. 3D Gaming on console is coming and we license the tech." - Andrew Oliver, CTO of Blitz Games Studios

Those of us who grew up with the likes of Intellivision and Atari were downright fascinated when the industry made the leap to three dimensions. Of course, it wasn't true 3D (no need for silly glasses, here), but it was a grand revolutionary step in a new direction, and now, we may have a glimpse of the next significant step.

According to MTBS3D, it has been confirmed that Sony "fully intends" to support stereoscopic 3D gaming and Blu-Ray 3D on the PlayStation 3 in 2009. Blitz Games will assist in this new technology by offering their Blitz Tech Engine for use, and according to the site, the console support "will only need a bios upgrade to work." It's interesting to note that the PS3 may be the only machine capable of such an upgrade, which may or may not have a future impact on the market. Right now, this is clearly in the infancy stages, but considering the announcement includes the 2009 date, is it safe to assume that games using this new 3D technology are already in the works? And what will they be like? We're getting the feeling that this may have to start small; like an EyeToy type gimmick or something, before they can really pick up steam and release 3D blockbuster titles. Anything this new needs time to grow, and it also remains to be seen if the gaming community will embrace this technology. Some say it seems obvious that they should, but we're not so sure...

Either way, it's worth thinking about. Although the industry has taken gigantic strides in 30 years time, there are many more mountains to climb. Perhaps the road to greater immersion is the road to take, and we'll have to jump on board for another revolution. Who knows?

I'd rather have head tracking FPS games that use the eyetoy and controller.

Me too.

Ok- no expert here, but stereoscopic broken down means two images, so it'll either be like the old red/blue glasses or the polarized ones. If that's the case, it's not anything that DVD, xbox360, the Wii, VCR tapes, basic cable all couldn't do.

Some current Tv have the ability to plug a 3d transmitter in them that sync polarized glasses to the screen and gives you 3d. much better thatn the red/green glasses. Issue here is though currently you have to run the video feed into your comptuer or special computer to convert 2D into 3D and then port to the Tv from there.

It sounds like Sony may be building the software into the PS3, to convert 2d to 3D on the fly for games and movies to work in conjuction with the TV's that will support 3d.

that would be a very wlecome edition as my samsun gis 3d ready, but i have not plunged into the 3d as it would be a pain to port everything to my pc (which isn't hefty enough to do this) and then back to the Tv.

better yet would be new blu-ray /games that would have the 3D coding built into them, so you can jsut play them and allow the 3d transmitter to sync the polarized glasses. Once those come out i would buy them as well. but it would be nice to give an instant 3d conversion to anything you already own that isn't already in 3d as you wouldn't have to double dip.
