You mean recommended time for a game before anything happens to the laser? Not sure, but I know I have done some marathons in Civ: Revolution and haven't had any issues with mine.

It depends, between blu ray movies and games I play mine a crapload, at least a couple of hundred hours since I got it last year, and I never had a problem with the laser, my parents on the other hand barely watch movies or play games and their PS3 laser crapped out on them this weekend, so they're gonna send it to get replaced, it just depends.

The big thing I've noticed with myself is needing the power management settings. I have a bad habit of watching a movie and falling asleep leaving it running for 24 hours. I've got it set for 3 hours ignoring wether or not it's playing a movie. This should extend the lifespan considerably because you don't have much more then an hour of unused uptime if you leave something in the drive and pass out.

I also have an original 60gb PS3 which quit reading all discs friday night. Because it is over 12 months old, Sony is charging me $150 to fix!
I agree that you should be able to play games or blurays for 24 hours a day but this is not the case... |

+1 I leave mine on all the time but make sure I take discs out when I am not playing them. I run a lot of folding at home.

Either I have been more cognizant of these laser failures or it is becoming more of a problem. It seems new posts are popping up daily about it... |

Use it or lose it. If you don't use it, you're missing out on games or movies or music.
What y'all need to remember is that it's just things. It sucks when it breaks but at the very least you get some enjoyment out of it. fuad |

There's no "lifetime" of the laser. It breaks sometimes. I had to send mine to Sony about 4 months after I got it. I've since had it for over a year and used it MUCH more and I haven't had a single problem. I leave my system on folding quite often, I play for extended periods of time, as far as PS3's go, mine works pretty hard
