When its in widescreen they just adjust it to 16:9 to fill the screen, but if its in 4:3 (full frame) how do they transfer it onto a widescreen high definition display? do they crop it to 16:9 ?

To keep the original ratio most likely old TV series or films like Gone with the Wind will be transferred in a 4:3 ratio with black bars on the left and right of the screen. This will be like 1600 X 1080 resolution since any time one has black bars they loose resolution. Most movie collectors including me prefer the original ratio.

When widescreen movies are released on Blu-ray many times you will have a small amount of black bars on the top and bottom just like anamorphic widescreen DVD’s unless the movie was shot in 16:9. I would be upset and stop buying movies if studios adjusted moves so they would fill the screen. Original ratio is the best way to watch movies.

If you want to see an excellent example of an Academy ratio 1.37 Technicolor short in Blu-ray go buy or rent March of the Penguins. The 57 year old Technicolor toon included there looks great and it's in the proper 1.37 aspect ratio for sound movies, about 1080 x 1485 pixels (well done Warner
![]() TV shows are shot protected with a 10% TV safe area in mind, and theoretically they could manage to eliminate that 10% from the height ending with an approximate 1.48 shape (about 1080 x 1600) but maybe they shouldn't ![]() I think the BBC also has 1.45 as a shape standard used in the transition from broadcasting in 4:3 to 16:9, our UK members should know more about this. *(Digital NTSC 486 x 720 is actually 1.35, PAL 576 x 720 1.37) |

Yes but where do these HD transfers of new Hollywood movies in 4:3 come from?
And why do channels like TNT HD play them? Or worse why that horrible "fish eye" thing they do so you can't even set it correct yourself? |
