Default sony (1st post)

Hi I did not see a place for introductions, and since I found this site when I was searching for info on my Sony Blu ray player, I thought I ould make my 1st post in this section.

I have a Sony KDL-40V3000 LCD TV,
Sony BDP-S350 Blu ray
Sony STR-DG720 receiver
Polk Rm 6600 speakers ( would like to find 2 more sat speakers so I could go 7.1)
Kenwood powered subwoofer (don't know the # on that one)

I am happy with the Bravia sync on my Sony components.. I have been trying to search to make sure that I have all of my settings correct between the Tv Receiver and the Blu Ray player....
I know my Blu ray player has True Hd, but I did not see anything about the receiver having this... (asking because of transformers blu ray)
Audio plays fine, I was just wonsering about the settings and processing between the 2 components...

Does anyone else have this set up? everything connected with HDMI cables..

Hope to do some more reading on here, this set up is much better than my old set up.

thanks for any replies...

OK, so here is the scope, your receiver can only process and decode Linear PCM, your Sony 350 will only decode internally Dolby Digital True HD. So for movies where the audio is in either PCM 5.1 or DDTHD you can listen to lossless audio with your current setup when the 350 outputs Linear PCM to your receiver.

Movies with DTS HD you will only get DTS core, no HD because your reciever cannot decode anything but PCM, and the Sony 350 will not decode DTS HD, it only bitstreams it to a receiver capable of decoding DTS HD.

If you still have time, I suggest taking the reciever back and getting a Sony 820, or take the BDP back and get a Sony 550, the 820 will decode the HD audio, and the 550 will internally decode and send out LPCM. by switching out one of the components you will have lossless surround sound that you are trying to acheive.

Otherwise if you are happy with the way things work then just make sure you have DDTHD set to pcm and you will have hd audio for a good portion of movies.

A quick recomendation, there's a thread in the HDTV section about custom settings for the TV, might want to take a look at it and do some calibration on the TV so you can get a better picture then the factory standard. There is also a calibration Blu-ray you can purchase on amazon to do your own settings.

thanks for the replies and the link to the tv settings.

I bought the Blu ray and receiver on sale at best buy, I really would like to spend more money for a better system, but I will have to be happy with what I have.... Both components were on sale for $199 each, I just was unable to say no. ( wife was ok with the blu ray, did not understand about the receiver)

I have been using my sons PS3 for blu ray's a couple of times (when I could get it out of his room).

I was waiting for the price of blu ray players to come down.. and when the 350 was this price i went for it.

I had an old kenwood receiver, that I had bought in a TIB package, it was having problems popping through the r/r channel at high volumes, and it damaged one of my Polk surround speakers drivers.( got a replacement driver from polk for $30 great customer service!!) it also only had an optical input, so i was not getting the correct sound from the PS3 blu ray.

Both of these were an upgrade for me and I bought because of the Sony name and definately the price.

*********So, then the only audio format that I will not receive the full effects from would be the DTS HD?************

I only have a few blu ray discs...
Cars
SWAT
gone in 60 seconds
The devils rejects?
full metal jacket
chain reaction
wild hogs
invincible
night at the museum
50 first dates

3 of these were free when I bought the tv at best buy, one was free with a rebate from monster on a hdmi cable, i think 5 were free by rebate from the PS3.
So the only one I bought has been cars. and I think my wife is getting Mama Mia for christmas... (not looking forward to this)
