Okay I have a question.
I shared my account with my friend, and I'm about to get a new hard drive for my PS3 for upgrading. So when I go to deactivate my account on MY PS3 and then re-establish my account on my NEW HD shouldn't pose a problem. What I wanted to know is that say my buddy shares his account with me. I downloaded games from his account to MY PS3. Then I DEACTIVATE his account on MY PS3. Will those games still work on my ps3 without his account being activated on my PS3? Just wondering.... |

2. Replace HDD 3. Run the system restore The above will guarantee that any copy restricted game saves will make it across to the new HDD. As far as accounts they should be stored in the core firmware not the HDD .. so you shouldn't need to deactivate or reactivate anything AFAIK. Deactivation should be for cases were you are selling the PS3 or you need to send it in for repairs and might not get the same one back. |

Well this is what I was looking at doing. First deactivate my account on my PS3 HD.
1. Exchange Hard Drives in my PS3. 2. Turn it on, and I'm guessing the PS3 installs all the OS software or whatever, onto it. 3. Create my psn account on my NEW HD. 4. Log in and download all the games I have already purchased. Now, will all that work smoothly, or am I missing a step? Once I deactivate my PSN account on the old HD, then when I establish it on the NEW HD, will it still be only listed as 2 activations on my PSN account back @ the Sony Headquarters (counting the new HD and my buddy's HD) BONUS QUESTION: Okay say I set up my buddy's account on my PS3, and download a game that he bought. Then I delete/deactivate his account off of my HD. Will that game that I downloaded from HIM still work on my PS3? I'm able to play them while signed in as ME, not HIM so .... And is there a list of games that are protected in the sense that you can't share them? That can only be played under the account that bought it? |

You don't need to deactivate your account.
Do the system backup, load in new hard drive and do a system restore.. Most of your content will return and log in with your old playstation account. Your user name on your ps3 has a primary psn account but you can log in with someone else's psn account onto that ps3 user name by signing out and then signing in with those credentials. Im not sure why you would want to deactivate your account.. |

So if I just delete the account without deactivating it, when I set it up on the new one it would still be listed as being registered on the other HD or something. |

Your PSN account is not saved on your hard drive, but only your credentials to login. Please note that deleting the user from the left could delete more than you intend, so please use caution. |

iTunes works differently even though it also has a 5 limit rule. It's tied to the iTunes software whereas the PS3 is tied to the hardware/machine. That's why wiping/replacing the HDD and therefore the software... is a problem for iTunes .. but not the case for the PS3.

Deactivation is for say you were going to sell your ps3 and never use it again, as its very permeant... If you do the backup your games will still be there when you do the restore.. If you are stil uncertain you may want to read some of the support docs... That if you do not have the saved games backed up on an external device before you delete the user profile, then they'll be lost forever. Though other things that aren't tied to the profile such as games/movies/music thats stored on the hard drive, will remain. Though if you downloaded a certain game from a deleted profile, you'll no longer be able to use it.

does the system update mirror your current ps3 setup if you are planning on upgrading your HD?
