Default PS3 accounts for 74% of all Blu-Ray Players

From Daily Tech

http://www.dailytech.com/PlayStation...rticle9916.htm

Soooooo....if 2.7 Million players were sold, and 74% were PS3s...come on folks, do the math...

That means 702,000 STAND ALONE Blu-Ray Players sold! (Edit: I guess I shouldnt sound so smug...I cant even do the math myself apparently!)

As per the last HD-DVD press release, 750,000 total units sold - 160,000 Xbox add on drives = 590,000 STAND ALONE units sold!

Moral of the story? Twisting numbers wont save a dying format!

P.S. Instead of worrying if PS3s and Xbox add-ons "count", maybe someone should be looking at how many discs are being sold! Obviously some gamers also like to watch movies in HD...both blu and red!

Actually, according to http://www.vgchartz.com/ there are already 2.75 Million PS3s in the US. In reality we are looking at close to 3.5 Million Blu-ray players.

Has the water receded at all in Seattle?

I purchased a PS3 for PS2 & Blu-Ray functionality

Oh, and PS3 when FFXIII comes out. This was over a year ago.

Same here, why pay the same amount for something that will only play BR movies when you can pay the same price and get something that is the best BR player on the market, easily upgradeable, plays PS1-2-3 games, goes online, let's you download trailers, etc.

It's a no brainer to get a PS3...it's awesome!

So how much credibilty does this report have?

Whichever way you spin it, it's bad news for HD-DVD.

The author of this article is drawing poor conclusions:

Quote:
According to Video Business, actual numbers of standalone Blu-ray Disc units may be around 700,000, as there were 2 million PlayStation 3 consoles sold through October.
The original Video Business article indicated 2.7 Million players sold as of Nov 24th, not through October.

So this new article basically ignores all the PS3 sales in November, which should be substantial.

Pretty bad analysis.

That is exactly why I referenced the vgchartz numbers. In all reality Blu-ray player sales are well above anything that is being reported.

vgchartz has a pretty horrible rep.

Using NPD numbers for the PS3 is a better way to go.... We should have those for the PS3 in a week or so, which will enable a better estimate of Blu Ray standalones. (Of couse, if the BDA told us straight out the breakdown that would be preferable).

But if you want to look at vgchartz:

They estimated 2,592,938 PS3s sold as of Nov 24th.

See http://vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date...ker=&boxartz=1

The BDA told us 2.7 M PS3s+standalones as of Nov 24.

2.7M - 2.59M = 110K.

So, I'd prefer if vgchartz was off the mark.

Not to be anal but wouldn't it actually be 702,000 (100% - 74% = 26% 2,700,000 * .26 = 702000)

Pretty good reliability, its Dailytech...they are pretty respected. Engadget is carrying the same story, as are others.

DOH! I just realized I computed at 24% not 26%....well, even better then! (heh, good thing there is an EDIT button!)

I-5 is still shut down, and the areas down south were hit pretty hard, but Seattle itself is still up and running....

Yeah no one can come up with authentic accurate blu-ray figures player wise because I was deciding between a HD-A3 HD DVD player and a PS3.
Walmart had the whole 10+5 free blu-ray movie deal, so I got a PS3 with no intentions of using it for any gaming till it was sitting in my house and I thought about it. I bought it as my choice in the HD format war.

After hearing about the walmart secret sale I went on to look to see what a PS3 could do and that lured me in as well. Easy internet access on the plasma, all sorts of games, the playstation store (not so great right now, but has potential), media streaming.

I'm buying more Blu-Ray movies than games, I just bought 6 more today.

There aren't 700k BD standalones. That number comes from some faulty math.

I disagree! I have heard stand alone numbers from some months ago stating that Blu-Ray stand alones were at just below 500,000 units total. Now we have someoone saying we have 700,000 just a few months later....well, I sell these things (through distribution), and I can say that sales (and interest) in Blu has been CONSIDERABLY higher in recent months, and I do not find 700K an unbelievable number. Remember that we have new units from Panasonic, as well as Sharp and Samsung out now, and we are selling a TON of all three of those. You also have Best Buy HEAVILY promoting the Sony entry level player, and you still have Pioneer pushing as well. The momentum is building guys, believe it!
