Default Is this sony sub any good?

My subwoofer at home just died on me. Granted it is a cheap piece of crap, but it is my cheap piece of crap. Well, now when i listen to it, it sounds like a mutted, flat, annoying hum instead of normal sound.
It sounds awful.
Now I am no audiophile, but I do like a decent speaker. I just got lots of SACDs and Blu-ray for Christmas, and now I am looking to replace my subwoofer before I can enjoy these.
So, looking around locally, I found my local tweeter just went out of business and I missed the sale! And all the other stores don't have much in terms of subwoofers.
Well, on Amazon, I found some, but I am on a tight budget, so I was thinking in the $100-$140 range.

I found a nice Polk audio for $125, (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...0344272&sr=8-1)

but I also found a Sony for $99, (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SA-W2500-...0344538&sr=8-6)

I think I saw that very Sony at Best Buy for the same price, and now I am wondering how the quality compares. It has a lot of good reviews. For the price, is this a decent subwoofer?

I don't know about the Sony sub, But as I own the PSW10, I highly recommend it. I absolutely love mine.

Well since you are on a budget, then I would go with the Polk PSW10. I just recently got into Home Theater and after reading a ton of reviews, I bought this sub as part of my budget HT setup and I love it. It's a pretty powerful sub for a decent setup, and definitely gets the job done in my bedroom. I've gotten comments when I have people over and they feel an explosion during a movie, and they kinda look over and go "holy shit dude". Now granted, this won't really impress a super audio guy, but to the average person it sounds, and feels, pretty badass

sounds pretty good then.
I will try to get the Polk. Since the price difference is only about $25 it should still be in my budget.
Thanks for the feedback

Yo! I have the Polk PSW10 also. It's definitely not the top of the line blow-your-house-into-orbit subwoofer but I loooove mine. It's my first sub and for my needs, it is absolutely perfect. Really nice sound for movies. Explosions and helicopters sound great (I, Robot helicopter when Sonny first gets arrested). Music sounds wonderful also. For approximately $140 bucks, you can't go wrong.

You could make a kick ass DIY sub like mine.

It cost me less than $25 for more than enough 3/4" MDF wood used to make it, about $20 shipped for the driver, and about $20 shipped for the port. I used a plate amp for it off one of my old Onkyo subs. So for way less than $100, you can make a sub that will blow any sub even close to that price range out of the water. It definitely has some output yet isn't sloppy at its job. It's no A2-300 but is a very respectable cousin. It doesn't look half-bad either.

Impressive.

I would love to do this someday, but for now I just want one that is already made. But making my own sounds fun.

Default get an Outlaw Audio LFM-1 EX Subwoofer.

For subs these are incredible! they go down to 18hz and are rock solid! I recommend for a good system to get one but eventually get 3-4 and that way you can balance it so that the bass is perfect in every inch of the room and that is much better than just one sub any day. http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/lfmEX.html

Did you even read the original post? He is comparing two subwoofers that are both priced under $150, and you're recommending a $650 subwoofer?

To answer the OP's question, i think if i were you i would go with the Polk subwoofer at that price.

Why don't look at THIS Yamaha which is comparable to the Polk with 100watts of power. This sub has a frequency response of 25Hz - 180Hz which is considerably better than that Polk. You may also want to look at THIS Dayton sub if you want a 12" instead of a 10". Its frequency response is the same as the Yamaha and it has 150watts of power. The Yamaha is $89.97 shipped and the Dayton is $139.90 shipped...both within your budget.

In regards to the polk audio set up:

"Before I start off, I would like to clarify one thing about the PSW-10 that might unjustly turn off potential buyers from it: it runs at 50 watts RMS"

i have the Sony sub the OP mentioned. the back labels says "70w". so i guess its 70w rms and not 100 as the amazon page states. it lacks in the bass department. i currently just have it hooked up in-line with my rear surrounds to give them more oomph.

the sony was the first sub i owned...for about 2 months. it works ok...not great. it's really good for music, but not for movies. it clicks very loud when using the auto-on/off feature, and it turns off after only about 5 minutes of non-use which is kind of annoying. the klipsch ksw-12 synergy i have now turns off after 15 minutes and i can barely hear it.

you should be able to get a better deal on that sony sub, i got it for $80 at circuit city almost a year ago.

I have the SA-W3000 it is 12" & 180 watts, I got it for $99, try ugotadeal.com, they usually have the sony subs pretty cheap. I love my sub, it does everything it needs too. kicks hard and stays consistent.
