Default Remember BETAMAX.....?

No.. I'm not taking a wistful walk down memory lane, but back in my day.. there were these new fangled machines that recorded the tellyvishun. One was called VHS and the other, which provided better picture and sound, was called BETAMAX. You can see how the market shook out. Lots of people bought into BETAMAX early, sure that it was the REAL deal, ended up shafted! I think the only way that Blu-Ray has a chance here is to get to market early and with as many vendors and as much backing as possible. Eventually, it will probably come down to which equipment manufacturing process is cheapest. Unfortunately, HD-DVD is supposed to be a bit cheaper to produce, requiring much less initial investment on the manufacturing side when compared to Blu-Ray. I hope for the best (Blu-Ray crushing the competition), but I can't help but be skeptical.

I chose "If I could get in line now, I would!"

I've waited long enough for HD movies on disc. I'm not waiting any longer than I have to. Yeah there's always a chance the format could fail but I like the odds that it won't. With PS3 using Blu-ray I feel quite comfortable that Blu-ray will succeed in the marketplace. It may happen that Blu-ray and HD-DVD can survive at once. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Depends on whether you can connect either machine to your tv via component, or whether they will make digitlal connections such as DVI and HDMI the only way to connect to your tv, (as is the case with Sky's hi-def service which starts 2006). If this is the case, I'll have to replace my current tv. Which won't happen as it's less than 6 months old at the moment. On the other hand, I won't pay more than £500 for a recorder either. I'm more likely to get Blu-Ray/HD-DVD playback through either the PS3 or possibly XBox 2 sometime 2006.

All it'll take is one Chinese company to make a DVI to component converter and then all the American companies will have to follow suit.

"If I could get in line now, I would!"

Just from what I have read on the web it seems that Blu-ray will take over HD-DVD. Toshiba and NEC are the ones developing HD-DVD from what i see, and blu-ray has all the BIG guys Dell Inc.,Hewlett Packard Company, Hitachi, Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Pioneer Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, TDK Corporation, Thomson Multimedia, Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures. For Blu-ray to put it to a end they need more Plublishing and studios to come aboard.

idd, I dont see why NEC and Toshiba are still developing this...

I mean, do you know how much (capital) power these firms have?

I dont see why the BDF didn't crush these companies in the beginning... :?

Only two companies against the world... And they're getting the most filmstudios... :? :?

I just hope Blu-ray wins, ppl need the storage...

Xbox 360 is not going to be using HD-DVD they will be using Dual Layer DVDs so that means only PS3 will be using the next gen Disks which will be blu-ray and with their massive Playstation brand they should beat the competision within a year

As Gorkab pointed out, this is common knowledge here. Rob wrote his comment three months ago when the answers weren't yet known. Please keep an eye on the date of posts when you reply to them, especially when meaning to correct something. Older posts aren't updated with the latest information for obvious reasons. We don't want any ruffled feathers. Thank you.

Yep. Back when I wrote that post it had been rumoured that HD-DVD was to be the format used by XBOX 2, (now XBOX 360). The HD-DVD consortium had been trying to persuade Microsoft to use it. But obviously Microsoft decided on the cheaper to liscence dvd format. Plus at a 12x dvd rate that must equate to a 100Mbps which is quicker even than a 2x 72Mbps HD-DVD.

sony ensures that it will be supported becuz they put it on the new ps3 and who doesnt want a ps3? even if it fails it will still be used for 5-6 years becuz of the ps3 , maybe it will just become the next game disc format.

Another thing is;

Blu-ray Disc is far more supererior than HD-DVD.
The gap between the 2 formats is bigger than the gap between VHS and Betamax...

Just wanna hilight that.
