Default The PS3 just keeps impressing me

I realize more and more every day how great a machine the PS3 is. The latest discovery is as follows. My home theater is downstairs but we have a 32" set upstairs we just use to watch television. Lately we've been wanting to watch DVD's upstairs on the couch for convenience's sake rather than using the larger TV and surround sound which is downstairs.

We decided to hook up our Wii upstairs since we never play it because if I'm going to go downstairs and play games I end up playing the PS3. Anyway, we just discovered the Wii doesn't play DVD's. How cheap is that? Nintendo didn't bother to include the ability to play DVD's on their oh-so-popular machine. WTF?!

Anyway, we ended up picking up a cheap Bluray player at Best Buy tonight (might as well get Bluray over DVD) but I thought it was really interesting that the highly praised Wii doesn't even play DVD's. That's just one more thing the PS3 does well.

While it is a bummer that the Wii does not play DVDs I've never really heard Nintendo promote it as anything other than a gaming machine. There focus is games, which is fine. I never understand why people get so up in arms over it not playing DVDs out of the box.

mainly because dvd has been the defacto standard for so many years and also that the wii games come on dvd's....but yes you are right when you say nintendo has never promoted the wii as a multimedia machine

the ps3 is awesome! great games, great blu player, it does it all!

I can see being surprised that the Wii doesn't play DVDs, but I don't know how you can be "impressed" that the PS3 does.

they know it can't upconvert. and believe it or not, thats that much more money they can save by not including dvd playback

I'm not necessarily "impressed" that the PS3 plays DVD's. What impresses me is that my PS3 does so much more than games whereas other systems don't. And Nintendo may not have promoted their machine to be a DVD player but it just seemed crappy to me that it didn't. The PS3 just does it all.

Well, the logic nintendo had with that is fairly sound.

Why pay the license fee to do something for the user, that they already have another device to do. Would you pay 20$ [arbitrary number] for a Wii that played back DVDs?

Ummm... Not sure if anyone remembers but I remember that Nintendo said it would play DVDs back when it was first shown, same time PS3 had 2 hdmi ports, a way to fight world hunger, and 3 Ethernet ports.

Kidding aside, I heard that the Wii was supposed to play DVDs but psssff...DVDs.

It wasn't cost effective. They didn't think people needed ANOTHER dvd player.
