Default Playstation family predictions for 2009

Since it's a Playstation board, let's keep it to Playstation predictions only.

PS3
- $100 price drop by September '09 on all SKUs, either all at once or 2 $50 price drops, one to coincide with Killzone 2/Yakuza 3 release and the other in the fall for the holiday shopping season
- No Slim, but there will be rumors of that coming in '10
- PS2 BC through software emulation will still be asked for by millions of fans, Sony might start doing that on a per game basis, but fans still won't be happy
- EyePet will be bundled with The Eye and will be released by Fall '09.
- Big push for Eye Toy Kinetic PS3 to compete with Wii Fit
- All our fears come true and Sony will try to emulate the Wii with a new line of Eye Toy games that will make heavy use of The Eye but won't require it, it'll however require the new breakway controller and it'll be bundled with that controller by Fall '09.
- FFXIII makes it out in Japan in Dec '09
- Dead Rising on PSN, Dead Rising 2 announced
- Gran Turismo 5 out in Fall '09 in Japan and Europe, US gets the shaft
- God of War 3 out in the US in Fall '09, Europe and Japan get the shaft
- Tales of Vesperia port on the PS3 probably by Summer but no later than Fall.
- Star Ocean IV by Fall or at least announced
- Mass Effect 2 is announced multiplatform, ME1 port possible
- Epic will tease Gears on PS3, but that will only be to get bigger moneyhats from Microsoft

PSP
- Price drop to $150 in the fall on the Core, $179 on the bundle
- Some features added will be the ability to go to HOME and trophy support. Only the most successful games will see a patch.
- Not a lot of new games announced except for those from Japanese companies and SCE
- PSP 4000 in the Fall with a decent camera and cool voice support programs
- Monster Hunter 3G Portable announced and probably released by Fall 09 in Japan
- Dragon Quest spin off where you play online with friends announced
- White Knight Chronicles Portable

PS2
- Price drop to $99 in the fall on the core, $129 for the Singstar and the family bundles
- The manufacturing in Brazil and producing PS2s in S. America will prove very successful. 1st party games that will succeed, should they choose to distribute them there, will be the big blockbusters (Gran Turismo, God of War) as well as Buzz and Singstar.
- Only new releases will be the MP sports games and

MISCELLANEOUS
- Sony buys one or two close developers, people will scream doom and gloom because of the financial instability right now
- PSN Music Store launches by Summer at least in the US, but probably WW
- PSN Video Store launches in EU and Canada (I think it has already launched in Japan )
- HOME is actually a financial success for Sony and grows

I think 100% that this NEEDS to happen but in reality only 5% of it will happen.

I really don't want none of The Eyepet Eye stuff to happen, so I hope I'm wrong about that.

Buying a software company now is the best time to do it. If they can afford the expenditure they can probably pick one up cheap because of the stock market crash.

Would they really want to drop the price on all their systems in the same fiscal year?

You'd think they'd keep atleast one of the profitable systems (PS2/PSP) at it's current price to help bring the money in.

I'll take the iPet stuff if it moves consoles quick. Once the fad is over and the install base is bigger they'll release more quality games...

The eye toy boom will also let me catch up with some trophy games I want to play, because I will be sitting those out.

None the news matters much to many of us here considering we already sepnt the dough on a PS3 anyhow.

It is a good time to buy someone if they can afford it. Namco / Bandai would be huge. Square Enix will probably be OK for a while longer because of their multi platform strategy - though I'd be curious to see how their RPG's would have done out of the gate on PS3 vs. 360. But we will never know.

I am getting sick of ports - as I am a big RPG nut and Eternal Sonata /Tales of Vesperia are already in my 360 library as my wife and I will play them now vs. waiting.

Though - by the looks of the demo - Eternal Sonata is tempting as you can tell a visible graphics difference - especially in color.

What I'd love to have is Dead or Alive on the PS3. I doubt that will happen.

My predictions for 2009:

Three Sony titles will be pushed back another year.

CES/E3/Tokyo Game Show/Leipzig/etc will come and go with nothing impressive(or at least nothing new) for the PS3.

Way too much time will be spent adding features almost no one cares about to Home.

The PSP will have a torrid release pace of one title per month in 2009, although about 1/4th of those will be blockbusters and sell really well.

Maybe I should go with off the wall predictions instead of the obvious?

I might be wrong but I think the PS2 would still be profitable at $99 and the PSP would probably still be profitable at $149, I think Sony is making a pretty penny on those 2 machines right now.

Well I don't want any Eye Toy stuff because I'm afraid that if it's even half as successful as the Wii line titles, then Sony might crap on their hardcore fanbase much like Nintendo has crapped on theirs. I would prefer to be wrong on that front, but I think Sony is gonna really push that because of the success Nintendo has found and because they thought about that stuff first, Nintendo just copied them and took it to the next level.

Sony will not purchase a big time player like SE or NB, it'd be a smaller closer developer like MM, L5, Insomniac or Sucker Punch, the biggest I can see them buying would be Atlus. ToV port is pretty much confirmed, NB messed up and listed as both a 360 and PS3 game on their financial sheet some time back, of course that was promptly removed shortly after but what's done is done.

sony have no money, unless the Yen devalues, expect no price cut past the very bare minimum.

Nice set of predictions there! I agree pretty much with everything except Home. I can't see this being a financial success. I actually went and deleted from my PS3. I don't know, maybe I'm in the minority, and maybe it'll get better down the road.

Sony "have" lots of money. Net Income last year (2008) was 3.7 Billion USD.
Assets are over 117 billion USD.

This is according to Wikipedia though so beware in telling your friends.

canon, nikon, sigma..all japanese companies making lots of cash, all putting their prices up in europe due to currency difficulties. No reason why other large Japanese companies wont do the same! Sony are reported to be having some issues of late too...
