Red face What should I choose ?

Hi ,

For christmas , my mom bought me the Panasonic DMP-BD35 player ( fantastic player by the way ) , and I really don't know which speakers should we choose ?

Does a 7.1 speaker really worth it ? I mean I have 10 Blu - Ray and they are all 5.1 ...

Moreover , I don't know where to buy a 2.1 5.1 or7.1speaker For less than 250 / 300 $ ...

Finally , does a 2.1 Master HD worth it too ?

Sorry for my english , I'm just 12 years old and french & I'm really new to the BD world ...

Thank you very much

First of all my young friend...Bienvenue!

Forget about 7.1 for now...there aren't enough movies out there that support it.

I would also forget about 5.1 for now, and instead go with a 2.0 system ( just 2 speakers). You can always add on other speakers later. Build your system slowly young man!

Also, I'm assuming you already have a receiver?

I agree here with john,
Take your time and just worry about the 2 front speakers.
Your blu-ray will still sound awesome so dont worry about that.

Thats a good starting point for you

Good luck too you

also agreed!

a "good" 2.1 audio system is usually sufficient for starters.

get a "good" receiver that supports at least 5.1, so that you can upgrade to more speakers later

___________

Personally, i have a 200$ Sony 5.1 complete system purchased at Best Buy. It's more than sufficient for all MY audio needs (on a sony 350 player).

I seriously wouldn't worry about 7.1 for a LONG time...

Yes, Yes young one get 5.1 later in the year, however a 2.1 will suffice just fine right now.

A reciever consists of 3 parts. This is just a basic example, but they are:

Power Amplifier: To power or amplify your speakers so you get sound.
Pre-amplifier: To control your componants (plug in TV, Blu-ray player, etc.)
Tuner: For listening to AM/FM Radio.

What kind of TV do you have by the way?

You will need a receiver to connect your speakers, so you should be looking at purchasing a receiver first! Right now there are some really good deals to be had on Yamaha products as they have released newer models. Last year's models are going for 40%-50% OFF. I can't vouch for other brands such as Onkyo, Sony, Pioneer, Harmon-Kardon, etc., but look around anyway.

Once you have the receiver get 2 speakers to start with (trust me...this will still sound terrific with Blu-ray). Connect your speakers and all of your componants (TV, Blu-ray, Game system, HD settop box) to the receiver.

Next speaker to buy would be a Centre Channel speaker and then either 2 surround speakers or a subwoofer (doesn't matter which..it's your preference).

I hope I've been able to clear this up for you! And let us know how you made out!

You have better English than a lot of people born in English speaking countries.

Some T.V.'s have "two channel surround sound".. whatever that is. So maybe you don't need a receiver at all right now.

If you get a receiver later, get a 5.1 to save money if the room you are using is less than, say 3.5m x 3.5m (about 10feet x 10feet). Once you get over 5m x 5m you start to get to the threshhold for going to 7.1. Either way when you upgrade, get a receiver, a center channel, a subwoofer and at least two side channel speakers; you can get the rears later. Most HTIB (home theater in a box) have crappy speakers, so skip that route and buy your components separately.

Welcome.
You are wiser than most twelve year olds.
You are asking the right questions!
Your father must be proud.

Are you looking online or at a store?
If at the store do you know what brand of speakers they carry?
Speakers are really a personal taste.
What sounds great to one may not be so good to another.
Its best to go with your father and listen to some different models in a store.
Then when you find a sound you like from a brand, shop around for the best price.
Speakers make the biggest difference in sound, so take your time and if you make the right choice can bring you many years of enjoyment.

Seeing as your TV has those IN/OUTS, you don't technically need a receiver. However, you're only going to get a marginal improvement as the TV doesn't have the proper amplification.

Simple put, to gain any benefit for watching/hearing the Blu-ray experience, you must have a receiver.

Nice find...however, that is Sonystyle.COM not Sonystyle.CA! They probably won't ship it into Canada. Plus..consider the exhange rate, shipping costs and potentially customs duties and taxes.

And yes, a receiver is better.

It goes to show that when someone (me) makes an assumption, one (me) inevevitably makes an ass out of themselves. LOL!

I have no experience with hooking up speakers to a TV, so I wouldn't be qualified to provide you with an anwser.

Can someone else help out our young friend from France?

John
