Being my first plasma set, what cables/connectors/accessories do I really need? Will be using a Sony receiver/Klipsch 5.1 and haven't researched BluRay player.

Whats your setup? First I would say HDMI cable for Blu-ray player/cable box , optical cable if you receiver wont do HDMI.

also...get a few hdmi cables.

It's a Sony STR-DE995 that I've never used- just realized it's probably not HDMI, too old. E=Most guys here seem to use Onkyo or Yamaha, what's a good recommend?

well, depends on how much you're looking to spend.

In the mean while, connect HDMI from source to the TV. And use Optical cable to the receiver for now.

Check out the new Panasonic SA-BX500...130 watts x 7 and it is a great match for your tv..I love mine...

I have the 58PZ850, and an older Sony receiver (1000ES). I decided to go with the Panasonic BD-55, and run analog audio from the 55 to the receiver. Works great for me.

I'm considering upgrading the receiver, but waiting to find a better price on one that passes full RGB (0-255) as the ones in my price range clip the video on the pass-through the receiver.

If you're considering a new receiver, then the Panasonic BD-35 will work fine, though there's some rumor that it's being discontinued.

The PS3 is a fine BD player, but if I were you I would go with either a Sony or Panasonic Stand alone Blu-ray player. The Sony 350 & 550 are really good & so are the Panasonic 35 & 55.

Yeah, alot of people are. Your getting so much bang for your buck why not. I know for fact that the Panasonic BD35 is already end of life which means stores will not be stocking it anymore, and I heard that the Sony 350 is very close to its end of life. So that leaves you still paying $399 for a blu-ray, hence a PS3 is still your best option.

I would do a PS3 for a blu-ray player... and get the bluetooth remote with it also. It is fast and conforms to all the blu standards. You may want to connect from the PS3 to a 7.1 receiver (like a denon 3808) and get some nice speakers of your choice. The options are limitless. It will depend what you like to do most... movies/music/etc etc

Will Direct TV bring an HDMI cable to connect their DVR/receiver or will I need to purchase one? Is the gold plated deal (monster or not) overkill?

They might give you an HDMI cable with the HD box, but if you got the SD box, then nope.

...also the cable is probably a category 1 cable...in which case is not worth its weight in pennies.

yeah if you are getting a DVR they give you a nice long cable (hdmi cable)
