Default Onkyo 605 (<$400 shipped) or 705 ($650 shipped) ????

I have an HD DirecTV with HDMI video output/optical audio, and a PS3 with HDMI output. My "upconverting" DVD can output HDMI video directly into my Samsung HT-6187 DLP (2 HDMI Inputs), and I can use Optical sound from the DVD player to my future Onkyo. My speakers are HTIB quality, but I plan on upgrading them later this year (Thanks Prez Bush!).

So, is the 705's THX certification and extra HDMI worth the extra $250?

I'm not doubting that $650 is a good deal for that receiver, but will the $250 I save be better spent on new speakers or another Blu-Ray player?

Thanks ya'll!!!

705 is much more future proof, being thx certified which a lot of people don't think means anything but it is nice to have. the extra hdmi is a big deal to me also though, i don't like buying something and already having all the hdmi inputs used like it would have been with the 605 for me so yes i think the 705 is much better. i was originally gonna get the 605 but just couldn' pull the trigger on it. wait for it to drop below 600 like i did... last weekend i got it on amazon for 599

I don't feel its worth $300. Heck, you can get an HDMI switcher to add more hdmi inputs if needed. As for THX, I have had both THX and Non THX receivers, didn't notice anything significant.

I think you'd be better off with the 605 and use that extra money on better speakers.

The only real advantage I see with the 705 is that it can matrix 5.1PCM into 7.1PCM.

That question is totally up to you at this point. Do you need an extra HDMI connection? And do you really need THX? The 705 does come with a learning remote, so that's nice.

In my case, I really didn't need another HDMI port and saw no value in THX for me. So, for $389 total shipped, I got a pretty good receiver for my needs. Just couldn't justify to myself nearly doubling it to get the 705.

+1 Right now I have a DTS and DD 5.1 receiver, but if I upgrade, the 605 makes much more sense. I only need 2 HDMI ports (PS3 and a 360) and certainly don't need THX certification to have good sound. I don't have THX certification right now, and it sounds awesome.

I would go with the 605, because I know I couldn't justify paying twice the cost for basically just an extra HDMI port. Plus, like hedz said, you could always get an HDMI switcher if need be.

705 also has an IR input (if you use an electric eye type thing) and a higher-grade room calibration system... the $300 isn't only just for the HDMI input.

So it will matrix 5.1 to 7.1. Will it do that for dts master audio and true hd?

Doesn't the 705 also have an phono inpu? And it isn't "twice as much. $400 or a little less for the 605 vs. $600 for the 705.

Still, I'm looking at the Yammy V663 nest month for about $500

Less than $400 shipped (605) vs. $650 shipped (705)

I found the 605 on Ebay for $360 shipped, but I realized it isn't an authorized Onkyo dealer. I want the warranty!

If anyone can point me toward a cheaper 705, hook me up!

Pre-outs are outputs on the receiver you would use if you wanted to hook your speakers up to a separate amplifier. They do basically the same thing as your speaker output jacks, but they send the signal out without amplifying the signal so that your external amp can do it.

Now you may not care about having those at the moment, but I'm always of the opinion that having more is always better. If, for some reason you want to use an amp in the future, then you won't have to buy another receiver.

accessories4less.com has the Onkyo TXSR 605 for $349.99 with free ground shipping and the 705 for $529.99. They advertise as an authorized dealer. I have not done any business with them but the price sounds right.
