ok, im new on here, i used to have a ps3 but sold it because it had horrible games, any way, it was good in the sence i could update the firmware for the blu ray. I recently bought the sylvania blu ray as a favor to my sister who runs a blockbuster.(she needed to sell one bad and i wanted another one) aside from slightly long load times and no optical audio out its a decent player, i just really wanna know if there is an update for the firmware? and if so where?? i checked the official site and this one but could not find info. and help please? thanks.

The Sylvania player is really just a clone of the Funai BD player.
Here is a list of BDs that the player probably will not play yet until Funai decides to release a new firmware: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1097723 Here is the Funai thread: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=48943&page=8 |

Does it have an Ethernet port? If it's anything like the Sony's it will update itself, when connected to the internet.

I know nothing about whether the Sylvania NB501SL9 is an exact clone of the Funai model. But here's my experience:
Price: $149 net of a $30 in-store rebate at a Costco in Dec-08. Haven't seen anything beat that. Performance: Plays all of seven commercial BDs tested to date. Plays all BD+R discs authored at home based on videos created with Pinnacle Studio 12.1. Recognizes menus. Also plays AVCHD-DVD discs and recognizes their menus. Firmware: Haven't bothered. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it). Sound: I have only two channel sound, so cannot opine on how the player handles additional tracks. Conclusion: Not a complaint in the world, except that it embarasses me to recommend the model and then receive complainst that it is "out of stock." The Costco where I bought it seems to have discontinued sales of BD players altogether! The start-up is not lightning fast, but takes under a minute. The compatibility with BD-R work is a plus, since some makes will not read the discs. |
