Default Question About Blu-Ray Reviews on this Site

I'm constantly trying to decide whether or not to upgrade a movie I have on DVD to Blu-Ray.

This site provides Blu-Ray reviews, on a scale of 1-5. My question is, what's the "baseline" to compare the DVD and Blu-Ray to? For example, Wedding Crashers: Uncorked Edition scored a 3/5 on video quality. How does this compare to the DVD version? Is the DVD version a 3? A 2? A 1? Does the DVD version not even chart?

Any thoughts?

Read the review and don't just look at the score. Hope this helps.

Ultimately, fans will be pleased with the fact that Wedding Crashers looks a lot better in high definition than it does on DVD. However, anyone looking to compare the disc to other more impressive comedy transfers on the market will be frustrated with what they find.

I do. Two cases in point: 1) I'm disappointed in how Christmas Vacation looks on Blu-Ray. This site scores its video as 2.5./5. How does the DVD compare? Well, the Blu-Ray does look slightly better than the DVD. 2) You Don't Mess with the Zohan scores a 3/5 on video. I understand why the vidoe is "soft" based on the review. Still, how does this compare to the DVD version?

Having upgraded a bunch of DVD's to Blu Ray, I must say there's a marked increase with each and everyone.
Here are some examples.......
Transformers
Blade Runner
Shining
2001
Resident Evil 1 & 3
Fifth Element
300
The Descent.........Heck any DVD will be better in BLU period.

You want a movie you like looking it's best, get it on Blu!

well this site doesnt review DVDs so thats hard to do. Only if the reviewer has previously reviewed a DVD version would that be feasible. Search this part of the forum, I guarantee theres a thread on almost any movie, if not just start one and ask others what they think. Its obvious blu-ray is an improvement over DVD but whether it merits an upgrade over the DVD is a personal decision

CGI movies look great on BD. and, it depends on what the movie was filmed on. we all know that star wars would look great on BD.

The reviews are for Blu-ray discs. They are not there to compare the release to its DVD counterpart, but there are some general indicators within each review that will give you a solid indication as to whether any release is worthy of an upgrade.

This is the way I look at it.

For AQ, the Blu-ray disc will always win out.

For PQ, if the reviewer gives a rating of 4 or higher, than this is a potential upgrade for me. Any less and I won't bother to double-dip.

Its a no brainer for me. I up-grade everything I own on DVD when it comes out on BD.

This is the Blu-ray picture quality rubric I use:

http://www.rmwhome.com/Imagescurrent...Q%20Rubric.pdf

As you can see, a 2/5 on this scale indicates a transfer that's difficult to distinguish between the standard def and high def versions. A 1/5 is actually the same or worse than a standard def version (although I think it's virtually impossible to have a 1/5 BD movie).

It's obviously a little more complicated than that, however. Some SD versions are so VERY poor that even a 2/5 Blu-ray version could be significantly better than the SD counterpart and might be worth upgrading.

But it's true that SD and BD use completely different scales. So an SD DVD version of a movie that score 4.5/5 on that scale is NOT better than the BD version that scores 3/5. As a general rule of thumb, BD will always look better than SD and, in my opinion, anything 3/5 or higher on the BD scale will "likely" be significantly better than the SD counterpart.

I agree.

I go by 3/5 or better and it's worth the upgrade. If its less than that I will get it from Netflix and see it before I decide to buy it. Most of the time if it's less than 3/5 it's not that great of a transfer and not worth buying unless it's a "must have" dics.
