Default Best & Cheapest Receiver for PS3

I know there's a lot of forums on audio for the PS3, but I haven't been able to specifically find one that shows me which receiver would be best for the PS3.

I know that I don't need a receiver that decodes DTS-HD or TrueHD because the PS3 decodes them internally. All I need is a receiver that supports PCM through HDMI.

I also would like 2 or more HDMI inputs & ipod connectivity, I'm not sure anything else is absolutely necessary? If I'm missing anything let me know.

I'm looking at spending between $200 and $500....the cheaper the better

Please help!!!!!

Onkyo 605 refurbished- $249.99

Yamaha 663

There was also a Sony receiver that was even cheaper, but as I'm not as familiar with them I'll let someone else chime in.

Thanks! Do I need 1080P upscaling?

I have my TV hooked up with components and PS3 with HDMi.

I have the Sony STR-DG820 7.1 receiver and I'm verry happy with it: $399

But that's Sony's price

I'm leaning towards the Onkyo 606, because of all the good reviews, price ($399.99 -it's in US, but amazon.com says free shipping) and the 4 HDMI outputs!

Not 100% sure though

FS doesn't seem to carry the Onkyo's......not many Canadian retailers do, as far as I know.

Just found out that www.accessories4less.com ships to Canada ($45 shipping)

Might buy the Onkyo 606 from there ($299.99 US) unless I find cheaper

Well I finally bit the bullet and bought the Onkyo TX-SR705.

Hopefully I made the right choice, it was relatively inexpensive and it has everything I need.

......uh oh....I feel buyers remorse coming on.......

If anything the 705 will be overkill. I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Nothing wrong with the 705! You will not feel any remorse.

Good choice, as I believe the 705 upscales, which you will need since you said your TV is hooked up via components. I'm surprised no one caught that.

Thanks for noticing that! Although with the receiver I'll be able to hook up my TV with HDMI cables. For some reason Sony TV's aren't compatible with my type of DVR (HDMI to DVI), the pictures would go blank after ten minutes.

Hopefully now I can hook my DVR to the receiver, then hdmi from receiver tv. (at least I hope I can)

UPDATE: I'm such an idiot!

I was looking over the product description for the 705 just to reasure myself and half way down the page in red bold letters is....

*Sold exclusively within the US only. No shipments allowed outside the US!

I only noticed now and nothing stopped my from processing the order. No money was put on my credit card yet, so i'll wait and see what happens!

Other than that I'm back to square one......

For the cheapest, I believe that the Sony STR-DG720 can be found for $199. It doesn't decode the HD codecs, but doesn't need to since it can do PCM over HDMI and that is how the PS3 outputs the audio anyway.
