Default DivX launches Ver. 7 - Includes MKV support.

Included is the ability to play .mkv files up to 1080p resolution with aac audio.

This has been a massively requested feature on PS3, and since the PS3 is a DivX certified device, the possibility of SCE and DivX integrating this update is relatively high.

Would this make the PS3 the ultimate media box?

I used to feel the same but since i bought my HD cam a year ago .mov is great. Very versatile and has saved me having to compress until the very last moment (and even not at all at some points).

(oh and just because i love apple isn't the reason i like .mov, promise!)

I think .mov is a great format!

Especially since i'm a web-designer, some of my websites utilize .mov files for built-in slideshows and videos... it'll be around for a while yet.

I'd really like to see divX support .MOD playback

It already is. As of now it takes me ~30 secs to convert full 8gb .mkv to 2x 4gb .m2ts and a few minutes to xfer it to the ps3 harddrive. all this update will do for me is NOTHING. i would still have to split any 8gb or 4.5gb .mkv into 2 files then xfer it to the ps3 harddrive instead of splitting and converting into .m2ts. there is a minimal time difference between these two processes.

Bursting bubbles here but while its a great update, it has super duper minimal impact on the current video playback. NTFS is the only change that will make a huge impact.

tsMuxer on a single core notebook from 2004 at most takes 2 minutes to convert a 4.5gb into 2x m2ts. tsMuxer is extremely fast mainly because you aren't re-encoding anything, just splitting and reorganizing bits and changing file type.

MKV2VOB is the best way. Do that then stream it over the network. Or Use the new PS3 Media Server off this forum. However, native .mkv would be really cool.

No way dude, it doesn't re-encode the video just transcodes it into the new container. Thats the beauty of it.

Yeh thats why apps currently out and available like tsMuxer and mkv2vob make this update rather meaningless. with or without this update you would STILL need to split files into 4gb or smaller. i have no complaints with my ps3 media-wise though. love it to death and use the hell out of it for divx/xvid/m2ts playback.
