Default Die Hard vs. The Terminator

I have a question i wanted to know which sounds better on blu the original die hard or the first terminator because if i remember correctly both were recorded in mono instead dolby when they first came out in theaters. I already have the terminator on blu even thou the PQ isn't that great but the PCM 5.1 sounds amazing and i know die hard has a DTS Master Audio track. I just wanted to know which one sounds better on blu.

The Terminator Blu-ray Disc was made by Sony before Fox took over. Sadly, it is the one of the few MGM BDs in existence to have a PCM track.

However, I am not buying this until Fox redoes the disc to meet their specs. Fox always includes the original track along with the remastered soundtrack.

In the case of The Terminator, its like Jaws. To create the 5.1 sound mix, Van Ling used the original audio stems for the dialogue and created new sound effects and re-recorded a bulk of the musical score. This means that the original mono mix contains all of the original sounds and music while the 5.1 mix is a different track altogether. Jaws' 5.1 track was made the same way so the "Academy Award" winning soundtrack is not part of the 5.1 mix. Only the mono mix won an academy award.

Die Hard was not mono in theaters. It was Dolby 4 channel Stereo so the Blu-ray Disc and DVDs offered the original Dolby Surround and new 5.1 remixes.

Sony was about to release Robocop on BD when they lost the rights. Essentially, it would have had just the 5.1 remix and most of the extras. However, when Fox took over, they included both the 5.1 remix and original Dolby Surround soundtrack but the extras were lost.

What year was the sfx for Terminator redone? They still sound pretty dated.

The new soundtrack was created in 2000 for the 2001 special edition DVD. The new 5.1 mix adds the sound of a door closing after Arnold say's "I'll be back." while the original mono mix is missing this. If you have the DVD, you can compare the tracks where every gun sounds the same in the original mono whereas the guns have individual sounds for the 5.1 mix.

The producers wanted to do a stereo mix but didn't have the budget for it so they chose mono.
