Default Has the economy affected you?

I have to be honest, the news that DOW-or whatever dropped in stocks and the announcements flying all over the place that the economy was taking a downward spiral surprised me, and I still haven't felt the effects of the recession. Probably because I live in Alaska and work for the government.. but I was curious to see how other people have been affected by the recession. I was reading an article about Circuit City closing and was surprised. They've been in business for a while, and other place, Shane Co., where I bought my fiance's ring, is filing Chapter 11 as well. So I think it's serious business.

So how has it been for you.

Fortunately, haven't been affected. Work for a bank that had one of it's best years (of over 45) in 2008.

Well, at least this thread didn't start-off with the OP asking "I don't see what all of the fuss is about the economy, as it certainly isn't affecting me". We had one like that a couple months ago that got real ugly....

Fortunately, I work in a sector that has not been seriously affected by the economical downturn. Our company is projecting EBITDA at or above the level of 2008 (which was a near-record year). Don't get me wrong, the increase in grocery costs and most everything else has been felt, but that just means we cut back in other areas to compensate (fewer blus ). I just hope gas prices don't jump back up to $4/gal anytime soon. As for my 401K's, I choose NOT to think about them for the next year or two...

I heard gas will be back up there in the summer...

Yeah, the 401k is not being acknowledged right now. Last time I looked it had dropped about 3 grand, which isn't huge but since I'm only 23 neither is the balance.

Its technically affected me. I'm no longer able to work 20 hours a week of overtime, so down to 40 hours a week flat. Kind of sucks, but I have a job so I can't complain!

It's affected my fam. a bit.
No more eating out, buying in excess, things like that.
The thing that scares me is Dow recently buoght our old parent company, Rohm & Haas, and with the news that their not doing so great is'nt good.

I get abstract, company-wide emails from upper management about how we need to cut costs and be more efficient.

People aren't flushing the urinals anymore, which is freaking gross. That's NOT the way to cut costs, so I flush it twice.

lol.

sort of the same here. Keep inventory low, cut cost. But keep the department full and build BIG displays to get extra sales. How can I cut back if you want me to build all these displays? WOW

I actually work in the stock market data field, and we're doing surprisingly ok. Companies that need stock quotes need them just as much (if not more) in a bad economy.

And regardless of the economy, there's no call for not flushing urinals - that's just unsanitary.

So far NO, its affected my company a little bit, but being the type of organization we are and what we do everyday, it hasnt really affected us, but we also lose money every year anyways.

no it hasnt affected me at all. This may sound strange, but since i manage my own porfolio (no 401k) the crash made me lots more money then a good economy could have.

At work had to cut my payroll dollars down..that mean less hr for the employees. they weren't happy but they still had a job..

I tend to spend less now on everything in general.

Thankfully, not in the least bit. Actually, at some points I feel like business is really booming for my family. If you're wondering what we have, my family owns a liquor store.

Currently, we're banking on other peoples' misery. I know that's a terrible thing to say but I am definitely seeing more than a few people spiral downward really fast right now. Sometimes I feel bad when I see them but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
