The S550 is a very good unit. The only problem is, when you watch a Blu-Ray, the upscaling won't impress you much any more. |

Panasonics are getting really good reviews for upscaling sd dvd, I would say the samsungs are prolly better with the reon chip or whatever its called, but then you have to deal with a samsung bdp and that is just not worth it. Just get a Panasonic 55 if you can find one.

+1, both the 2500 and the 2550 (identical Bestbuy model with Pandora) has the reon chip that is generally regarded as one of the best mass market solutions for DVD upconverting.

Probably a dead thread at this point, but just thought I'd pass on that I have an LG BD370 is it's upscaling is awful. I've done immediate comparisons between the LG and the PS3 and the difference is night-and-day. I end up using the PS3 to play SD DVDs and the LG for Blu-Ray. (Why I don't necessarily just use the PS3 for everything is another story...)

I tried 2 Oppo BD-83's and returned both.
It was too glitchy for $500. For dedicated Blu-ray/DVD playback I got the Sony BDP-S1000ES. Right now you can get it for $200 at many places (Amazon, Crutchfield, etc.) but it is going fast. This player upconverts DVD as good as the Oppo's. (It has the Marvell chip in it). It also has built-in wifi, comes with a free USB flash drive and has a 5-year warranty as an ES product. I highly recommend it. |

I think you will be very happy with it.
I have only watched a couple of blu-rays on it, but it is every bit as good as the Oppo for depth, contrast and resolution. I am viewing it on a 106" screen. The other day I watched one of my rare DVDs with it and I was floored. The DVD has to be decent to begin with, but it can do some things with edge-smoothing and noise reduction that makes a DVD quite watchable. I almost thought to myself, "Damn this is like blu-ray!" But then reality hit when I saw a detailed distant shot. Blu-ray is much better. ![]() |

If money is no object - Oppo BDP-83. If you want to spend less than half that and get pretty darn close to its upscaling quality, Pioneer BDP-320

dont want to make a new thread, but i guess i will if no answer
i havent watched alot of dvds on my ps3 the ones i have watched were upcoverted good and filled the screen in there proper aspect ratio but i put in 2 movies today and they played in 4:3, when they are really widescreen, they showed 4:3 on the screen but still had the black bars so its really hard to watch, and if u stretch or zoom it just looks awful why is that? i dont remember if i changed any settings, so wut should my settings on my ps3 be to properly upcovert a dvd? its weird, widescreen movies playing in 4:3 with black bars... ![]() |
