Default 480 input message with blue ray dvds

I have a SOny s350 player, which is wonderful. However, when I select the recall function, which pulls what I think is the input characteristics like input aspect and resolution, it shows 480 even when I have blu ray disks inserted. Do I need to activate the Blu Ray resolution, or are my disks just mastered in 480 and put out on blue ray disks? The display isn't static, as the aspect will change from 4:3 to 16:9.

Thanks for your help.

Aha. I thought that might not be automatic. Happily, the TV is a brand spankin' new Toshiba Regza that supports just about everything. But it IS an output function of the player?

I feel quite the fool. It's output through RCA jacks so that it can go into a splitter. That would do it. I'm off to best buy to get an expensive HDMI cable. You;re the man, PREDATOR.

did you change the settings on both the tv and player after you hooked up the hdmi cable
also i assume you mean the display function as there is no recall on the players remote as my parents have the same player and looking through the manual i dont see a recall button

You are correct, I did not change the settings on the DVD player yet. I shall do so shortly.

VICTORY! I reset the output settings from the DVD player and am now getting full on 1080! My GF doesn't see the difference, which is disappointing but predicted. I have now become my Dad, who couldn't (and still can't) convince my Mom that there is a difference between cheap speakers and great speakers.

Thanks for the help once again. I am off to watch The Thing and marvel at all the stuff I haven't seen since I saw it on the big screen.
