It never got more essential than Hellraiser I (coming soon to Blu!)
Written, directed by, and thoroughly encapsulating Clive B., who didn't direct the others.

("Nightbreed" came...close, but was too overtly gay-allegorical for his usual cool--Imagine "Hellraiser meets X-Men 2".)

I think Nightbreed is still awesome and certainly worth a watch if you haven't seen it. You get bonus David Cronenberg with that film also.

Not sure what to say about the overtly gay stuff, as I never noticed those themes.

Book - The Damnation Game - his best novel that hasn't been turned into a movie.

Movie - If you haven't seen Lord of Illusions yet, it's worth a rental. I'd also recommend "Valerie on the Stairs," an adaptation of his short story from the 2nd season of Masters of Horror.

I love Nightbreed and actually just watched it recently once again!

Before that I tried to watch it about 4 months ago, but the wife kept picking on it for some time (how cheesy it is... blah blah ) and I actually had to turn it off or would have gotten even more mad!

Well the Hellbound Heart is a novella, so it's a much quicker read. Damnation Game is kind of long, but it's very involving and some great storytelling.

You know, me too. People talk about that with Nightbreed, Nightmare on Elm St. 2 (or 3, I can't remember), X-men 2, Jeepers Creepers 2, and I just don't see it until people start pointing out examples.

I just finished History of the Devil.. was an excellent book.

Midnight Meat Train was an excellent new movie, and on top of Valerie on the Stairs he also did Haeckel's Tail another great short on Masters of Horror.

If you enjoy his short stories, you can always read Books of Blood vol. 4-6. They were retitled for their American releases: The Inhuman Condition, In the Flesh, and Cabal respectively. Cabal also features the story that Nightbreed was based on.

Well the main elements are pretty much the same. The only real differences are there's much more of a build-up of Frank in the beginning (I've heard the "gay undertones" thing about this, but to me Frank's just more of a seeker of pleasure in whatever form it presents itself as opposed to being overtly gay), and also Kirsty is a family friend as opposed to the daughter.

They have in the past. It's out of print, but still available.

http://www.amazon.com/Books-Blood-Omnibus-v-2/dp/0751512257/

But be advised that it won't include the story "Cabal" (aka Nightbreed). That was not originally published as part of Books of Blood volume 6 and is exclusive to the re-release (the book Cabal).

Well, if you're interested in a series rather than a stand-alone, "The Great and Secret Show" and its sequel "Everville" feature the character Harry D'Amour (from the movie Lord of Illusions). There's a third book being written called "The Scarlet Gospels" in which Harry battles Pinhead from Hellraiser/Hellbound Heart.
