I had a quick question about the Playstation 3. I read earlier that there are going to be some new updates to the requirements on all blu ray players. I heard it had something to do with the Matrix Blu Ray movies. How will this affect the PS3? Will it only need a firmware update? Thanks

Considering of the blu-ray players out there, ~98% of them are a Playstation 3, I wouldn't worry about it not supporting new movie features.

PS3 is the best possible blu-ray player for the upcoming hardware, because it has the HDD to put the BD+

I think that there is only one blu-ray movie that doesn't work on the ps3, unless the issue was fixed with the last firmware update. Not sure. I think that the ps3 makes a great blu-ray player as you don't have to spend extra to watch movies except for a remote. Sony could release firmware updates in the future that could apply only to blu-ray movies.

Actually we don't know yet, and Sony's not telling. Hopefully it'll support all of the functionality in the next revision of Blu-ray, but one of them is dual decoding of datastreams and doing that for 1080p AVC could be more than even the Cell can handle. Until some official word or the actual update is ready we'll just have to wait.

The PS3 has the horsepower to decode 2x 40 mbit/s.

It would be a daft mistake to exclude the PS3 from running future Blu-ray discs, especially given the (comparatively) slow consumer uptake.
Sony have the capability to update the PS3 in any way they wish, and I'm sure they will do so. Saying that, we've still not had sight nor sound of 1080p/24 or upscaling, but I'm sure it will come - as will full back compatability emulation for the European models. ![]() |

Speaking of PS3 updates... I've been updating all along using a memory stick and this last update just won't take. The unit will not recognize the update on the stick. Same stick, I've re-done it on the stick 4 times and the PS3 still wont take it. Ideas anyone? I can't do it by broadband... the unit's not in a place that has access.

![]() All BD players, even current ones support BD+, hard drive or not. BD+ is a security measure that is in the minimum BD specs. |

Had no probs with 1.7 at all, although there's not much of use for me on that update. |

For these questions, since technology evolves so quickly, and the uncertainty of the answers, this is the ONLY reason I buy those two year PRP's from Best Buy on new consoles only. That way in two years from now mine will "accidently" break down and I will get a full refund of the purchase price to apply towards anything in Best Buy. I bought them on on my Xbox 360 and my PS3 (the Wii probably won't have any big feature's added later, as far as hardware goes).
That way if my 360 were to "break" next year, I could get the Elite, with probably HDMI 1.3, and IPTV capability, without having to spend another $500 just to upgrade. Likewise for the PS3, if they add support for 1080p/24 (questions still arise if this will be corrected by firmware), or new Blu-ray specifications, or even maybe 802.11n, or triple or quad layer Blu-ray disc support (which usually can't be changed via firmware), again without spending a hefty price for an upgrade. Likewise even if there are no real changes in hardware specifications, the price usually drops dramatically in two years so you can get the full original purchase price back and repurchase and still have money left over to buy something else. I ONLY buy PRP's on items that in two years will evolve, thus making them worth the while. |

If it can handle two full rate 1080p/i AVC streams that's great. It's the first I've heard of it as I thought the demos they've been showing earlier of multiple 1080p streams were mpeg2.
That said, it's still not an automatic given that it'll fully support all aspects of the new BD profile. Sony's very much keeping their cards to their chests and have still not said whether it will do it either way. I take nothing for granted given how things are very much subject to change - there could be other technical issues (or even corporate politics) getting in the way. |
