Default Superman returns on Blu Ray...

Hi,

My first Blu Ray movie is Superman returns... Should get it in the Mail in a few days now...

Since I have never seen a Blu Ray movie's visual quality, I was really wondering...

I just watched the Superman Returns 1080p quick time trailer at its native res & it looked amazing...

Can someone tell me if the quality in the HD 1080p trailer 2 is the same or better/worse then in the Blu Ray format?

thanks.

Superman Returns on Bluray is 1080p, just like the trailer you watched... They're exactly the same.

However, I assumed you watched it on a PC monitor?
A) What size is the monitor, and what is it's maximum resolution?
B) This will also depend on the max resolution of your television set. Is it full 1080p? (1920x1080)?

1080p is a set resolution of source video, so it depends on the quality of your tv or monitor more than the video file.

There will be a difference because of the tv/monitor size difference. But OF COURSE the bluray will be amazing! It will probably be better even, because i'd bet your HDTV has a higher max resolution than your PC monitor.

The 'Superman Returns' Blu-ray quality will not be the best 1080p picture that you will see on the format. However, the Blu-ray still looks pretty amazing. If you have seen the original Superman films with Christopher Reeve, you will notice that Bryan Singer (director of 'Superman Returns') tried to keep with the artistic intent of Richard Donner's soft image pallet in the original.

You'll be much more impressed with the picture quality on a blu-ray compared to the quality of its HD trailers

Hi, & thx for the replies...

I will be watching BR on my PC, which has a 30" LCD 2560x1600 resolution.

1080p native res looks small compared to 2560x1600 . But at full screen it still looked earth shattering amazing...

I also had another query.

I just saw the King Kong HJD 1080p trailer which was in full 16:9 aspect ratio, but when I ordered the BR version it says it's only 2.35:1.

Is there a way to get the BR uncropped version in full 16:9? People say its better coz you see more with a wider aspect ratio, but really they just cut 30%+ of the picture.

thanks...

The 2:35:1 is the Original Aspect Ratio of the film. When viewed as 16:9 you are not seeing more picture, the picture is being stretched to fill the aspect ratio and it looks larger. Nothing was cropped from the original.

2.35:1 is the aspect that Peter Jackson choose to shot it in, so why would you want to reduce it to 1.78:1 or 1.85:1? That doesn't make sense to me. Black bars are your friends. The director's vision is also your friend.

Embrace the black bars. Embrace the original aspect ratio.

Dude, that's like saying they cut off the top and bottom of the picture to change fullscreen to widescreen. You got it backwards; 2.35:1 is the native resolution. The trailer was made at 16:9 because that's the standard.

Sorry for being so noob, I just assumed this from watching a star wars episode 3 doco, ep3 was apparently shot at 1920x1080, they cropped the 1080 to 800 to get a wider look.

Not like they kept 1080 & increased the horizontal width.

What is the native resolution that superman returns & KK was filmed in?

thanks.

The Original Aspect Ratio for Superman Returns is 1.78:1. The Original Aspect Ratio for King Kong is 2.35:1.

That's not correct. Superman Returns is 2.40:1.

Then it must be wrong on Amazon.com. I just checked there:

http://www.amazon.com/Superman-Returns-Blu-ray/dp/B000JVT09C/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1232584652&sr=8-1

For the new true HD audio version, I just checked and they indicate 2.40:1.

It's the obvious 2.35:1 is NOT 1080p topic I guess.

The King Kong HD 1920x1080 trailer is NOT stretched or anything, it's at its orig filmed res. They do crop around 34% of the total pixels on screen (from 1080h to 817h) as they do in episode 3. I just watched the same scene from KK on dvd (2.35:1) which is same aspect ratio as on BR, to the 16:9 HD trailer.

34% of 1080p (263x1920) is alot missing, 2.35:1 is cheating windscreen, It's not wider at all. If it was it would maintain the 1080 h & be 2538w.

superman returns is even less with only 800pixels h.

2.40:1 is Superman Returns original aspect ratio. It is exactly the way it was intended to be seen.
