I understand that it's important to break in your plasma... but it's such a tease to have such a beast of a TV and not be able to play with it to its full potential right out of the box... A lot of folks have said you have to break it in for 100-200 hours before calibrating, etc... man! What a tease! Wasn't it really hard for all of you to break-in our TVs for that long? I guess I'll only get to watch concert blu's (full screen) for the time being once I get my TV.

Yeah, it's kind of crap IMO. I mean even if you leave the TV on 24 hours a day, 200 hours is over 8 days. I haven't gone through it yet, but it's something I'm taking into consideration considering I game a lot and don't really want to wait or be limited in how I use it.

no, when i considered that my panny plasma would last years and years and thousands of hours, 150 hours didn't seem that bad at all! I just watched regular tv zoomed for non hd content, then for hd content just basked in the glory as no zoom was needed! it went by very fast imho
Technically you don;t have to break in the tv, it is just a recommendation, however panny does recommend a break in period. after spending $$$ i would rather have piece of mind ![]() http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...tGroupId=24973 Last edited by brett_day; 01-25-2009 at 11:13 PM. |

lol, i know how you feel! honestly i felt the same way, i would not wait until the 150 hours were up, i wanted to calibrate my set lol, but the picture this thing produces even when all the settings are 50 or below for the break in period is simply breathtaking!

I have the Panny TH-50PZ800U that I got a couple of weeks ago and I have been watching various Blu-rays and DVD'S with no problem.I even called Panasonic about this "break in" thing and was told that it won't hurt the set to watch movies with bars .Some movies I watch are 185 or 178 to one while others are the wider formats.I do use just or zoom mode on 4x3 based video.I can handle bars on the top but side bars are a distraction to me.

no, im just gonna follow the avs forum and put everythund under 50 and use cinema mode or whatever, then run the break in DVD off my SD card for like 15 hours or so.
i will of course just check out like 5 mins of a blu-ray and some tv first. after my initial 100/120 hrs is up, i will then calibrate it. i am going to attempt to break it in as much as possible, i know some folks say u dont need it, but id rather be safe, what is 7 days breaking in vs.. 2 weeks of wanting to return/deal with panasonic cause theres a screw up with burn in |

Nope.I just use the THX mode and watch material with diff aspect ratios. When I talked to a rep at the Panasonic plasma concierge he told me it would be fine to play that way.As I said I don't use the 4x3 mode ever because the side bars anoy me.By the way, in the owner's manual that is the mode that is mentioned about causing image retention anyway.

I just mixed up my viewing and did the color images from www.webapalooza.com for 90 minutes per night when I went to bed ( I used the TV's timer feature). During the day, since I work from home, I would sometimes have the color images playing when I would have music streaming from my network. I have not had any issues.
BTW, I kept it on HD2 and Just the entire "break-in" period without issue. Last edited by Hammie; 01-26-2009 at 01:52 PM. |

When I got mine, I set everything to the cnet recommended settings and that was it. I was just careful watching stuff with black side bars for the 1st couple of weeks. But I've been playing games, and watching pretty much anything I wanted to since day 1.
On a side note, I did end up changing the settings later because the picture was a little too dark in my living room. |

Break in is a thing of the past.
I have a Panasonic plasma. I did no break in. I have watched countless hours of letterbox movies, used it as a still image viewer, had multiple 4-5 hour gaming session on it and never once experienced even the slightest bit of burn in or image retention. Enjoy your new TV! That's what you bought it for! |

OP its all a matter of what u think ull do.. IMO if 200+ users on AVSforum break in their Plasmas i will too.
there are advocates that break in does nothing and... those who say u must doit or else ull more likely suffer from IR and image burn. i assume ull have this tv for at least 3 years... 100 hrs is nothing... 365 days X 3 = 1095 days x 8 hrs a day viewing = 8760 hr- 100 = 8660 Hrs of viewing anyways. lol Last edited by Santeria; 01-26-2009 at 07:54 PM. |
