Competition check - Killzone edition
Being an office of many magazines, we all get to see the big competitor games when they come in. So, in the past year, between all the 360 love, well, we’ve seen LittleBigPlanet. And that’s about it. 2009 is already shaping up to be a little more varied though, and it began today when I noticed Killzone 2 preview code casually sitting on a desk in our sister magazine Play’s work area. Naturally, I asked for it to be put on, and twenty minutes of beautiful, gritty, heavy gunplay later, I’m back to post my impressions. It’s good. Really good in fact. this is the genre that has belonged to the 360 since its inception, but it finally looks like Sony has an Ace in its deck. Visually, Killzone 2 is quite something - besting even Gears 2 in the motion-blurred grey battleground stakes, and the weight and purpose of everyting from the weapons to the characters is somethign to behold. Most importantly, though, it’s really satisfying to play. The enemy AI, coupled with a well implemented cover system (unusual for an FPS) means Killzone 2’s skirmishes are uniquely challenging and gratifyingly meaty. Of course, the key to success in this genre is variety, and having only seen a snippet of the opening mission, it’s hard to judge whether Killzone 2 will switch up its speed and set pieces enough to enter the Pantheon of truly great shooters. But for a first impression - wow. Halo ODST has a lot to live up to. |

Just raising our expectations for the game, however I think we've all set the bar so high that even if he said it was terrible, we'd of shrugged it off like it was nothing. It's like we are Mario and just grabbed the gold star bouncing around, nothing can touch us!

They reviewed MGS4 as well, I think they take the high road when it comes to PS3 exclusives, review them as gamers rather than xbots...

Thats good that they review it honestly. They don't need to lower themselves to fanboyism. I love and play my 360 (for games) more than my PS3, but this game looks like it will knock the socks off of anything on the 360, it is going to be so sweet. I have it fully paid for and reserved at Gamestop, it just sucks that they ran out of demo codes.

IDK, it depends on the game there hasn't been anything epic enough on the 360 worthy of breaking ranks. Maybe Alan Wake, but even then MS would need to hype it up...

We need to stop with the labels. I am **** gamer, I am a *** gamer, and just be a gamer period. I don't play Wii (had one, played for a while, collected alot of dust, sold it), and I don't play on PC but I definitely read about whats coming out on those systems. I get just about every game mag there is (for the US) and my favorites look at all games. I don't know thats just what I think. |

I read some of the comments that some of the members left and I found them to be surprisingly respectful. There were only a few bashing the PS3 and there were even some bashing the reviewer for saying the only good game we had last year was LBP and MGS4 or R2. K2 man,

Amusingly, they used a screenshot from the infamous 2005 pre-rendered trailer. I think the real time screenshots have been looking better recently.

I mean how they claimed not to use press copies for reviews.
[ edit / add] Also not doing reviews until the game is out, instead of the common/popular review before the game is out, again from a press copy. At the time part of the justification was removing some of the obligation to the publisher. |
