Default Quick DLP Question

I am looking at purchasing a Samsung 56'' DLP TV. I was just wondering, since Samsung will no longer be producing DLP TVs in 2009, what is a good estimate of bulb lifespan? I've heard estimates all over the place, so has anyone had any postive (or negative) experiences with bulb replacement? I am sure I will be able to find one in 5 years or so (or just buy a new tv then) for $200 or something and can easily replace it. Is this something I should be worried about or should I jump on the HL56A65 like a fat kid on cake? I'm really excited about this tv, especially at a price of < $1100, but I just want to make sure it will last long enough to be worth the money.

I would say go for it. My buddy had a Samsung DLP that he said would be on from any where 6-18 hours a day for 3 years (depending on the day) and never had it calibrated (extends bulb life). The bulb just went out a couple months ago. He sold it to another one of my buddies for $500 and now that guy uses it all the time and loves it.

Do you think it will be easy to get bulbs say 3 years from now when Samsung is long out of the game?

If you are looking to purchase a new Samsung RPTV then it will likely be an LED model as I believe that most if not all the newer Samsungs are LED therefore the lamplife is estimated at 20,000 to 60,000 hours not like the older model pre 2008 model which have a lamplife of 5,000 to 8,000 hrs. I've had my Samsung 61' almost 2 years and the display is like new - have a buddy with an older model RPTV about 5 years old and has had to change the lights unit 3 times already. With the Samsung LED it is unlikely that you will have to change it for the life of the TV

Unfortunately the model I'm looking at, the HL56A650, does not appear to be LED.

You could always get it from Best Buy with their service plan. If they don't have a part that is needed to repair the TV, or the part is on an excessive backorder, they replace the TV.

Hmm but then I'd have to pay $400 for a 3-4 year plan, which theoretically, is more than the bulb costs. I am guessing I'll watch this TV enough so that three years down the line I will have to replace the bulb (assuming 8-9000 hours). It's not a big deal, if I can get 6 years out of this TV while spending only $1080 + $250 for bulb, I'll be very content.

it basically paid for the bulb replacement and it's covered...

I would be ordering through Amazon since it's cheaper than Best Buy. It's a third party seller though and I don't see anything about warranties. Is this something I can buy separately through Samsung?

Ok now I found it for 899.99 from Second Act. No idea about the seller but I'm so tempted to bite hard on this deal.

EDIT: At that price, I don't care about bulbs. I will gladly pay the money to replace them in 3 years. Unfortunately, the warranty doesn't come with bulb replacement.

Check around town in smaller TV shops for a replacement bulb. I did this and saved about $50, rather than buying at a big box store. Aftermarket bulbs are just as good. I suggest buying a replacement bulb now... instead of possibly being screwed down the line.

I just replaced mine, was a snap. It lasted 3yrs with a more than normal amount of TV watching... maybe 8-12 hours per day.

Well I must say I'm extremely excited. I got the TV for 899.99 with free shipping through Second Act. I read a bunch of testimonials on neutral sites and felt confident in placing my order with them. I will definitely look into getting a replacement bulb or two and keeping it stored somewhere. I'd imagine there's about 35 hours of TV usage per week on average, and I could possibly stretch the bulb out to 5 years. Either way, I plan on having , graduated law school by then and having a job to pay for my expanding toy collection.

Thanks for everyones help!

Just get it & have a extra bulb on hand. Keep the vents free of dust. If worried about the bulb get a LED DLP. ENJOY

I just went to Second Act to take a look and they said they were out of stock. You did get it?

Yeah, got it in the mail yesterday. Very impressed with the company. Ordered at 2am on 1/27, shipped later that day. Arrived 2/4. Shipped from MN to MD (they flew it), all for free. 899 for a gorgeous new TV (not refurbed like most of their stuff). I am very impressed with Second Act.
