Default Ok... might be a stupid question but... I VS P

I understand I=Interlaced & P=Progressive, my TV does not support 1080i though? Is there much difference visually? think I heard I is less grainy somewhere before...

Anyone wanna clear it up? Thanks.

there is a lot of debate between 720p vs. 1080i. as you stated, 1080i is obviously a higher resolution, but interlaced, whereas 720p is lower resolution, but progressive (which is why 1080p is the best of both worlds ). to me they both look almost exactly the same. but if you only have a 720p tv, no worries whatsoever. you're not missing much, if anything at all

what size is your tv? a lot of benefiting from 1080p comes 1) (from mainly) the size of your tv and 2) (lesser from) how close you sit to it

im sure other people will bounce in here and give their own 2 cents. i personally have heard that tvs smaller than 40" won't benefit THAT much from 1080p. i compared a 1080p version of my 40" to a 720p one and could see little difference, a least a difference so little it didn't warrant spending another $500. so again, i'd say you're not missing much. yes the resolution is higher, but on a 32" it would be hard to tell the difference anyways. unless you had eyes like a cat. do you have eyes....like a cat?

NO....

Make sure you determine the optimal resolution depending on the size of t.v. you decide to get, vs. your viewing distance.

I have a question. Hope its not too stupid. Does the above apply to all tv's and front projectors? (I am giving serious thought to replacing my TV with a front projector and screen) Thanks

Yeah. It's a rule of thumb though. Light, individual's vision, the quality and brightness of the picture- are all going to impact this a bit.

well if you prefer artefacts and bad processing. But for everyone else a pure 1080p stream is better.

I prefer artifacts and bad processing for less money when they're not visible to the human eye anyways............

i 2nd that. theres no need to spend the extra money on 1080p if you're barely going to be able to benefit from it in the first place. you may love having the best of the best, but if you're not going with a necessarily large screen and if your sitting location isn't real advantageous to 1080p, id think it would be better to spend the money on more blus or just something else in general.

It amazes me that we still have folks who've been around here for quite some time who hold to the "it must be 1080p or nothing" mentality. Obviously they choose to either not educate themselves on the subject or are simply incapable of understanding anything more than "a bigger number is better".

I was thinking about the "Bigger is Better" mentality earlier.... and must say, given the choice between watching my copy of "The Shining" (just one for instance) on DVD on my 106" screen, or on Blu-ray on my 32" LCD in the bedroom, or 37" LCD in the living room on blu-ray..... I'd probably watch the standard Def DVD on the 106" screen..... there is just not much that can replace the "Experience" of watching a movie via FP.... Fortunately I don't have to make that choice

The wife and I often get movies via blockbuster online/netflix on DVD such as "Burn After Reading" and "Step Brothers" (terrible movie) just to name a couple of recent ones, that we KNOW are available on blu-ray, but we only have a blu-ray player in the theater, and in the family/living room, and we know there are times when we want to watch a movie late-night in bed on a Sunday evening etc.... so I plan for it by picking up movies we want to see on DVD...... I'd never pick up something like Hancock, WALL-E, etc. on DVD rather than Blu-ray though... because they're movies I want to really enjoy the audio on, so they're blu-ray, and saved for "Movie Time" in the theater....

I guess I don't mind watching DVDs as much as some people here claim to....

Sorry this post went off into multiple tangents!!

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight.

There's certainly nothing bad with 1080p- it's the best of the best, but if you're sitting 20ft away, I challenge you to notice the difference on a 42" set vs 720p. There needs to be some common sense used when shopping for any product, and where money can better be spent elsewhere.

and a mile away you can't see a difference from 480i, what’s your point. Add stupid criteria and you come out with stupid conclusions. How many sit 20'+ from a 42" screen?

PS, I don’t really feel like getting into it, but yes at 20' many might not see the difference, but the right source and knowing what to look for and even then a difference can be seen.

Charts are crap and are worthless. Buy the TV you want and that best fits your needs/finances. This whole viewing distance vs screen size is BS unless you are sitting really far away from a small screen.
