Sony STRDA2400ES vs Onkyo TX-SR806 receiver - Blu-ray Forum

How do they compare? Right now I have the Onkyo TX-SR806 receiver and I am looking to replace it with one that is not as big, heavy and hot. It also needs to decode all the latest formats, upscale to HDMI output, output to a ZONE 2 and not have a depth of more than 40cm.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Marantz makes shallow depth receivers (16 inches or 40cm).

Sounds like you want a Marantz.. they're great quality, run cool, have a <16" depth, and so on. Very nice receivers..

Lowest model for you would be the SR5003. The SR8002 introduces a toroidal transformer.

I don't have any experience with Sony receivers. I'm sure they're good - sony makes good products. But if they're like any other Sony multimedia hardware, figure them crippled by the firmware in as many ways as Sony figures it can get away with. (Yes, I'm a bit bitter about my multimedia-crippled PSP.. my old flagship mini-disc recorder.. etc..)

@Zippo: The 6003 looks silly to me in comparison to the 5003.. an extra $200 msrp for what.. 10 worthless watts per channel? Other than that the specs look pretty much identical.

The difference in watts between the 5003 and the 8002 are irrelevant. In fact, I wouldn't recommend higher than the 5003 unless you need the extra I/O on the 7002 or 8002, in which case I prefered to spend a little extra for the transformer in the 8002. That's why I only posted links for those two.

The 6003 also has a second HDMI output if you want to route the video signal to another TV or projector.

6003 looks better to me because the buttons are hidden behind the flip down door. All new Marantz products ( blu-ray players, cd players, receivers, pre-pro and amps ) will have a similar look.

@sokrman14: Good catch.. missed that. I can't see too many folks using multiple HDMI outs though - it's the ins that are most important as far as I'm concerned. I have a projector and I can't imagine wanting to switch between that and a TV. But to each their own.. /shrug

@ZIPPO: Fair enough.. I do like the flip down door - and wish the 8002's rca jacks were inside it.

after comparing the specs of the Sony 2400ES & the Marantz 5003 , I'd suggest going with the Marantz 5003.

Agreed, Marantz makes top notch products, Sony audio stuff is okay, even though their ES is better than some other stuff.

Thanks....I hadnt even thought of Marantz. The 6003 does look nicer with the concealed buttons, matches more with my Silverstone HTPC

Now I just have to sell this Onkyo receiver

OK, i sold the Onkyo and purchased the Marantz SR6003. It should arrive this week, got it on sale for $999.
